Jota Ese's Talkin' Smart to a Pimp; Treekeeper's 'Texaco' [Fresh Tracks]

Day Old Records describes Jota Ese’s new VHS beat tape as "30 minutes of Music City’s most blunted, lo-fi hip-hop beats." That seems like a fair description to me. Talkin’ Smart To a Pimp (hear/watch it via the YouTube embed above) is an entertaining mix, and one that manages to straddle both the “codeine-soaked gangster rap” and the “diggin’ in the crates” side of the blunted, lo-fi hip-hop universe. The video itself is also a trip. It features pieced-together footage from all the most gory and obscure VHS tapes.

Could Treekeeper’s “club-friendly” Migos tribute song “Texaco” (stream it below or via Soundcloud) be Nashville’s first Internet banger of the year? Well, I’ve put in a lot of mileage on “Texaco” since it released two days ago, and it still won’t quit. If your footwork game is a little rusty, Treekeeper’s new joint might be all you need to ease yourself back in there.
