The long wait for new Dead Weather music is over, and not just for Third Man Records Vault members. Today, TMR posted “Open Up (That’s Enough)" — the band’s first musical offering since 2010’s Sea of Cowards LP — on the label's YouTube page. The song — which was first made available to Vault subscribers as an exclusive 7-inch — is, for most of us, perhaps the first taste of what the supergroup (boasting Jack White, The Kills’ Alison Mosshart, Queens of the Stone Age utility man Dean Fertita and The Raconteurs' answer to John Entwistle, “Little” Jack Lawrence), has in store for a series of forthcoming stand-alone singles and, eventually, a promised 2015 LP.
Sounding like a mash-up between the band’s surprise inaugural single “Hang You From the Heavens” and White’s more recent Blunderbuss rocker “Sixteen Saltines,” “Open Up” is a musical U-turn-rife bombastic grab bag of haunting hard-rock sonics. They're augmented by an undercurrent of sexual tension courtesy of White and Mosshart, who wail over the ruckus like a star-crossed couple arguing over just where in the desert they should bury a body.
