An extra reason to celebrate came this past holiday weekend with the announcement of the full schedule for the 2014 Muddy Roots Music Festival
, coming up Aug. 29-31 at the Junebug Boogie Ranch in Cookeville, Tenn. The lineup of the world’s most eclectic and oddly copacetic celebration of rock ’n’ roll, roots and rowdiness continues the tradition of pouring various cans of musical whoop-ass into an extra-large gumbo pot for a tuneful stew that kicks like a Tennessee mule.
At the top of the lineup are pioneer garage-punk n’er-do-wells The Sonics, grunge grandmasters Mudhoney, seminal L.A. rockabilly rumblers The Blasters, first-wave hardcore punkers The Weirdos and country troubadour Bobby Bare, still riding high with the hillbilly-punk cred earned by his 2012 LP Darker Than Light
Looking further down the bill there’s excitement aplenty, including a special Muddy Roots reunion of the Legendary Shackshakers, along with frontman J.D. Wilkes current “dayjob band” The Dirt Daubers. Other local favorites include Hillbilly Casino, Greg Garing, Richie Owens & the Farm Bureau and the garage-punk “supergroup,” Kings of the F**King Sea (featuring Poni Silver from The Ettes and Chet "Cheetah" Weise from the Immortal Lee County Killers). St. Louis roots traditionalist and Third Man Records signee Pokey LaFarge has also signed on to play.
Delta blues fans will also find plenty to celebrate with bluesmen Elmo Williams & Hezekiah Early, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes and Terry "Harmonica" Bean on the bill. Several Muddy Roots favorites are returning this year, including Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss, ANTiSEEN, Reverend Beat-Man, Goddamn Gallows, The Tillers, Left Lane Cruiser and many more.
Tickets are now available at this link at an earlybird price of $85.
