Has it really been two-and-a-half years since Nashville’s favorite Finnish singer-songwriter-vagabond-ogre-provocateur Ville Kiviniemi (aka The Mattoid) bid Music City farewell and returned to his native Helsinki? Day-um, time flies. But it certainly hasn’t been as much of a party in these parts without The Mattoid’s poncho-garbed, potty-mouthed art-brut antics, which of course included riotously mirthful covers of classic love songs tunelessly bastardized in broken English. “The main [idea] is to pick out, in my opinion, lyrically the worst songs ever written,” he told the Scene in 2011. “I see some beauty in them when you actually rape them real nice.”
Though gone from Music City, The Mattoid is not forgotten, and luckily still somewhere out there doing his thing. Here’s a taste: It’s a video that the singer/performance artist posted on his still-active YouTube account, of himself comically caterwauling the classic The Thomas Crown Affair theme “The Windmills of Your Mind.” Enjoy!
