The Spin had boots on the ground elsewhere, so we didn't catch the performance ourselves. But according to local vinyl fetishist Tim Hibbs — who was spinning records at last night's hang — here's what went down:
As Hugh Mitchell was midway through his set, I turned around only to see the singular Robyn Hitchcock! As surprises go, it was a very, very welcome one. Robyn joined Chris Pickering’s band with the Nashville Horns to play a couple of songs, including a luminous version of “Tangled Up In Blue.” Robyn also asked if I might fancy spinning some vinyl at his Mercy Lounge show on September [12th] (!). It was enough to render me speechless, which is never an easy task.
How's that for a Nashville moment? One of our finest freelancers actually just interviewed Hitchcock in advance of that Mercy show, but the rocker didn't mention being in town. We put in a call to Two Dollar Tuesdays host Derek Hoke, who said he didn't know why Hitchcock is in Music City — just that he's pals with Pickering and fellow Aussie singer Emma Swift, and that Pickering had mentioned that "a friend" might be sitting in for part of the set. A friend indeed.
So, anyone? Is he recording here? As one Facebooker mentioned, did he just "show up two weeks early for soundcheck"?
