As Sure as the Sun Will Shine: The Harder They Come Playing Sept. 5 at The Belcourt

Like Curtis Mayfield's great score for Super Fly, the soundtrack to Perry Henzell's The Harder They Come has not only taken on a life of its own beyond the movie, it has overshadowed its source film over the years. In the early 1970s, it was one of the first wave of cult movies to catch on with midnight audiences — it played at the late Orson Welles Cinema in Cambridge, Mass., every Saturday night for at least six years — but after the ’80s it was mostly available to people around here on cruddy VHS.

If you've never seen the film that made Jimmy Cliff an international star and boosted reggae as an artistic and commercial force — or if you've never heard "Many Rivers to Cross," The Maytals' "Pressure Drop" and the inexhaustible title track booming through theater speakers — The Belcourt is showing the film one night only on DCP 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in honor of its 40th anniversary. Tickets available here.
