Aww yeah, summer solstice is here — time to bust out our druid robes and go frolic in the woods! Just kidding, fuck that noise — we all know that summer is about jumping in the whip, turning the beats up loud and cruising real slow with no particular place to go (except maybe that announced-last-minute Yelawolf show tonight at Anthem). And man, do we have some beats this week. First up is "Sinkholes," the new one from Kid Dead. It's a slow burner, contemplative and introspective, touching on Dead's life experience without regret or nostalgia. It's actually a really beautiful tune, and the accompanying video by Maurice "24/7" Barrett really conveys its low-key, understated vibe well.
Now it's time to crank it up and bump all that party and bullshit ...
* The rumors of Bill Breeze's demise were greatly exaggerated. Breeze dropped off the map for a minute there, but now, as the title of this one so eloquently states, he's back with the heat. "I'm Back" is upbeat and soulful with a classic Kanye vibe.
* Now this, ladies and gentlemen, is what summer sounds like. The Lonely Biscuits turn in another stoney, bluesy rap-rock number that never elevates beyond cruisin' speed. This is about as casual as it gets.
* This one's been kicking around in my inbox for a minute, but it's no less dope. Dee spits the real ish over a chunky synth groove from the Infamous Jean Claude's new 1992 Lisa Bonet project. Also, Lisa Bonet tweeted at Dee a couple of weeks ago, which I am totally jealous of ... God, I had such a crush on her when I was a kid.
* You want to know a really quick, simple way to get my attention? Start your mixtape with a Roy Ayers sample. It's as easy as that. Now, if you want to hold my attention, you're going to have follow Ducko's lead and fill that tape with dope beats and fresh rhymes.
