Maybe I need to post this one over on Bites? The new Classic Williams video for "#Repeat" from his Epic Win album is one of my favorite things: a song about food. And I'm not just excited about it because I skipped breakfast and I'm really hungry. (Do cigarettes count as breakfast? If so then I definitely had breakfast.) With shout-outs to Ru San's and Mafiaoza's (I ate there last night!), boasts of sexual prowess over synth-heavy trap beats and an infectious hook, "#Repeat" finds Williams in his prime. Classic has evolved into one of the city's most interesting MCs, smoothing out his flow and letting his rhymes go in directions that most folks won't. He's also got a goofy sense of humor that adds a nice touch of balance when spits hard. Check out the whole album here.
And now for more partyin' and bullshittin' ...
* Man, it's been a minute since we've heard from Struggle. Oh yeah, that's because he's still in jail. BUT the album we discussed at the Davidson County lock-up — the one built from his grandfather Waylon Jennings' original tracks and stems — is finally out, and it's pretty special. I'm rarely one to endorse the country/hip-hop crossover — 99.99999999999 percent of it is really embarrassing — but Struggle and crew actually make it work really, really well. It helps that they had the original source material and were able to use Waylon's original tones to create a soundscape that feels natural and unforced. And let's just be honest: Waylon was one funky motherfucker with a damn soulful band, so finding hip-hop-ready grooves in his archives probably wasn't that tough. All in all, pretty frickin' rad.
* I am not sure why I haven't posted this one yet; I keep on listening to it over and over again. But regardless, "Fire" is the heat, and BLKSUNCHILD is an artist to watch. His flow has a unique bounce and some clever rhymes that fit right into the back-flipped beat. Also, Kaby.
* Is that the world-famous DJ Premier wearing a Boom Bap shirt in the new "Papoose" video? Yeah it is. Fuck yeah it is.
