Old Spice: Spice Girls in Spice World, This Weekend's Belcourt Midnight Movie

Posted By on Fri, May 10, 2013 at 11:05 AM

Even at the mid-’90s height of Cool Brittania, The Spice Girls seemed destined to end up a tiebreaker at some local bar’s Pop-a-Top Rock Trivia Nite. When they reunited to a communal roar last year in London’s Olympic Stadium, my kids looked at me in “Who’s that?” bewilderment. If you want to observe (if not understand) the fuss, their bubble-brained 1997 vehicle Spice World — playing midnight tonight and tomorrow at The Belcourt — is an artifact from the days when Posh, Sporty, Scary, Baby and Ginger Spice were Blighty’s chief weapons of mass distraction.

The intent was to provide the largely interchangeable members with their own A Hard Day’s Night. The result landed somewhere between Cool as Ice and Herman’s Hermits in Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter — though the incessant cameos (from Hugh Laurie and Alan Cumming to Sir Elton and Sir Roger Moore) keep things moving. Today, it's of special interest, after 1979’s Americathon, as the second intersection of the Meat Loaf and Elvis Costello filmographies — and not, we hope, the last.

Oh — and yes, we hear Belcourt staffers will be outfitted in Spice regalia. Male staffers.
