Road to Bonnaroo Round Three Tonight at Mercy Lounge

Posted By on Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 7:45 AM

The third and final installment of this year's Road to Bonnaroo series lands tonight at Mercy Lounge. It's a pretty promising and diverse lineup — looks like it's anyone's game. I wrote us up a Critic's Pick, so have a look below if you please.

This year’s Road to Bonnaroo — the annual series in which local bands compete for slots at June’s music mega-festival — has inspired some impressive competition and seen some talented if unexpected winners. Dark-horse soul outfit Alanna Royale took the Round One trophy, while throwback psych rockers Ranch Ghost secured Round Two’s slot. Likewise, Round Three’s lineup doesn’t feature any clear standouts, but it is indeed ripe with talented Scene faves: old-school-legit-style punk rockers Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders; Americana songster Jacob Jones; goof-about electronic experimentalist Meth Dad; synth-popping melody masters Ponychase; tongue-in-cheek, dual-drummer’d rock ’n’ rollers Ri¢hie; lascivious cock rockers Tipper Whore; soul-pop crooner Billy Swayze; and party-rocking power trio The Wans. Interestingly enough, the lineup appears to be pretty equally split between outfits who make totally earnest, heart-on-sleeve fare and outfits who like to throw a bit of mirth into the mix. Expect to oscillate between fits of laughter and tearful moments of sincerity. As always, the 8 off 8th is free, but get there promptly — both of the past Road to Bonnaroo installments have reached capacity very early in the evening. —D. PATRICK RODGERS

As always, the 8 off 8th is free and kicks off at 9 p.m.
