The trad-country-cribbing chanteuse just debuted "I Was Cruel," the second track from her Jordan Lehning- and Skylar Wilson-produced The Stand-In, over at Spin. "Cruel" is a tune by The Deep Vibration — the former Nashville outfit of which Rose's guitarist Jeremy Fetzer was (and is?) a member — and not unlike "No One to Call" (at least as far as arrangement is concerned), it takes a few cues from country- and Americana-rocking heartlanders and Brits like the Stones, The Byrds and Petty. "Her voice begins with a quiet quaver," writes Spin, "curves ever-so-softly into the sweetest notes, then goes wide for the panoramic harmonies and soaring melodies that the song's buff Americana arrangement deserves." You can listen to "I Was Cruel" below or at Rose's Soundcloud page.
Cato will hit the road in support of The Stand-In shortly after its release, kicking off her tour with a March 9 show at Mercy Lounge. The album art, which you can see over there on the right, was done by talented occasional Scene doodle-doer Rachel Briggs.
