Party & Bullsh*t: This Week in Nashville Hip-Hop [Quiet Entertainer, Dee Goodz, Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics]

Hey party people, where you partying tonight? You should be partying over at The 5 Spot, helping Quiet Entertainer celebrate his birthday/the release of his latest album Dream Sequencer. What, you need more cajoling? Check out this little piece from the ol' dead-tree edition of the Scene:

Of all the people clamoring for attention in Music City, Quiet Entertainer may be the most soft-spoken — but his artistic voice has greater resonance than most. He doesn’t release a lot of music, his Internet presence tends to be more cordial than controversial, and he just kind of hangs back and keeps it ... entertaining. Quietly, of course. He’s been refining his live performance, finding a deep, ambient hip-hop groove that incorporates DJ skills, live production techniques and most recently, live video mixing. It’s basically exactly what you want from a guy with a well-documented love for Tangerine Dream. Tonight he celebrates the release of his latest album Dream Sequencer — we see what you did there! — with electro-phreakz Hanzelle, party-goon performance artists Fistikuffs and the guy with the biggest beard in underground rap, Spoken Nerd.

It couldn't have said it better myself! Well, maybe I could have, but I already did. And now it's Friday, so I'm fresh out of give-a-fuck! Yay for Friday! But seriously, I've had Dream Sequencer on repeat since QE sent it over, and I have to say it's gorgeous, with a multitude of layers manifesting themselves in a cohesive and beautiful whole. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself, unless you've been drinking cough syrup and operating heavy machinery. That could be dangerous.

And now that we're all relaxed and focused, let's move on to some partyin' and bullshittin'.

* And Dee Goodz's quest to run the entire world continues at steady pace. Or maybe, a furious pace. Either way, Goodz is on track to be runnin' this shit if this live video from Danto's Party House in New York is proof.

* Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics are coming back to Nashville! The Atlanta outfit hasn't been through town in almost four years, but they've got a new album ready to roll, and they're going to be swinging through The High Watt on Sept. 7 as part of the G.E.D. Soul tribute to James Brown. I'm so stoked! I love this band almost as much as I love my wife, which is funny because they totally played at our wedding. Seriously, one more whiskey and I might have moved to Atlanta.

Aaaaaand, I'm out. Holla at me on Twitter or email music[at]nashvillescene[dot]com
