Communion Nashville Feat. Big Surr, Foreign Fields, Jessie Baylin, Jill Andrews and Gold Motel Tonight at The Basement

So, perhaps tonight's Scene-sponsored Sounds Like Summer event (featuring Ledisi and Eric Benet) at Marathon is a little rich for your blood (I mean, I'll put you on the list if you really want me to). Or maybe you just want to hear some pop-minded rock music rather than pop-minded R&B. Also fair. There's quite a strong local bill tonight at The Basement, and it's part of a new monthly tradition that's popping off all over the globe. Intrigued? Here, I'll let me explain it. From my Critic's Pick:

If you’re familiar with the acts on this bill, you might find yourself asking, “What do any of these folks have in common with one another? I mean, aside from the fact that they’re all good.” But that’s precisely it. According to Basement honcho Mike “Grimey” Grimes, the point of launching Communion Night (first Thursday of every month) at his Eighth Avenue haunt is “basically to book some good shows.” Founded in the U.K. by members of Mumford and Sons and Cherbourg along with producer Ian Grimble, Communion Nights have now spread to cities including NYC and San Francisco, with a brand-new installment launching last month at The Basement and featuring performances from Trampled by Turtles, Michael Kiwanuka and more. This go-round will feature local breezy lo-fi punk-poppers Big Surr (for fans of Best Coast and Wavves); Chicagoan indie-pop troupe Gold Motel; Knoxville’s folk-flavored pop songstress Jill Andrews; Wisconsin transplants and dreamy, ambient folksters Foreign Fields (who frequently garner comparisons to Bon Iver); and pop chanteuse Jessie Baylin, whose Little Spark was released in January and remains the frontrunner in the race for my favorite album of 2012. Seeing as how Baylin’s got a bun in the oven, you might not get too many more chances to see her perform before she achieves Mom Status. —D. PATRICK RODGERS

Cover is $10, show kicks off at 8 p.m.
