Is the EP out? What's going on with this? Is there a new Treekeeper EP floating in the ether and I just can't track it down because I'm an old man and can't keep track of all the rampant Wingding abuse in contemporary music? Probably. I still haven't recovered from playing the Soul Ayslum Drinking Game, and I'm definitely feeling my age. Get off my lawn! Wait, no don't! You kids are all right by me! Even if your Internet presence is byzantine and a tad overwhelming. The new video for "Tropicale" is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a tune on a rainy Friday afternoon. It's like Martin Denny meets Massive Attack, maybe. I had to spend a good eight hours with The KLF's Chill Out just to rinse that Soul Asylum record out of my brain — any references to things created after 1993 are pretty much beyond me at this point. But I like these Bohemian Hype Cult kids. Their track "Tarantino" — hey I recognize that name! — and Young Pradda's "Spoon" over on their Tumblr are both pretty stellar slabs of futuristic hip-hop with enough skill and craft to make an old man ... what was I saying? Is it time for Matlock yet?
No Matlock? Then it must be time for more partyin' and more bullshitin'. Consider this the jump-off.
* KDSML dropped a new mix, and it's on that future-bass tip. Sure, it's not exactly hip-hop and thus not exactly what I'm supposed to be writing about, but the kid is still a turntablist and he's taking the art of party rockin' in pretty bold directions. This is what your friends are going to be trying to do in two years.
* Duck McFli disappeared for a minute, and now he's everywhere! That's a good thing. The video for "The World" is exactly where my backpackin' head is at — smooth horns, deep, laid-back bass and a really mature, maybe a little road-weary flow. Grab The Return of the Real over at Break on a Cloud.
* Cat videos and hip-hop — these two things should overlap more often.
