Remember our Sounds Like Summer series? Last year the three-installment-in-three-weeks rock-a-thon went down at the, unlikely, Hard Rock Cafe Downtown and featured a justice league of awesome acts including Real Estate, The Greenhornes, Turbo Fruits, Dent May, The Legendary Shack Shakers and, guilty as charged, Guilty Pleasures.
Well, SLS is back. Once again the series will go down on three contiguous Thursdays, from July 19 to Aug. 2. Not at Hard Rock, but at the voluminous Marathon Music Works. And what hot-shit headliners to we have slated to fill that room?
Well, the shit kicks off July 19 with two decades of frill-free, note-perfect nostalgia from Guilty Pleasures and My So-Called Band and wrapping up Aug. 2 with Ledisi and Eric Benet. Oh, looks like I left out deets about the middle week’s installment. Not out of negligence, but because, like one of Vanessa Williams’ sentimental suitors, I’ve gone and saved the best for the last (that is if you don’t count this post’s lede graph, of course). Headlining Sounds Like Summer’s July 26 installment is, and I’m really not kidding, Guided by Voices. (Support TBA.)
Can you believe it? Indie rock’s favorite drunk uncle and his ragtag troupe of chain-smoking, riff-slinging, middle-aged drinking buddies is going ring lead our fuckin’ party.
I promise this makes sense, at least to me. It’s like this: Guilty Pleasures cover “(I’ve Had) the Time of My Life” as part of their dirty dance-tastic, Adam Curry-era MTV hits repertoire, and this summer I will have the fucking time of my life. And if July 26 turns out anything like GBV’s 2011 Cannery Ballroom gig, I won’t remember anything in between shouting along to “Motor Away” and waking up on a coach soaked in regurgitated Taco Bell. Can’t wait!
Sorry for the maladroit musings. It’s just, I don’t know 'bout y’all, but I haven’t heard news this good since Osama bin Laden got whacked. … Get your tickets here!
