Watch that video even if — especially if — you don't usually read this column. This is the sort of next-level musical geekery that needs to be shared with EVERYONE. This is a reason to be proud of your town, folks. Put it on full-screen, watch his hands closely and wait for it. When you figure out exactly what's going on, your jaw is going to hit the floor. It's sick, sick, sick. You might know Sylvester from his work with future-jazz outfit Call It Anything, or you may have heard his contributions to The Perfect Hours records, which have gotten a good amount of play around these parts. Even if you don't know him, you will know he's a bad-ass after this lil' nugget is over. I'm not gonna tell you what happens, but I will say that this is a minute-and-11-seconds well spent. And seriously, it's the Friday afternoon before a long weekend — it's not like you're really doing work. Watch it.
And then travel along with us to a three-day weekend's worth of partying and bullshitting!
* It's a good week for steppin' up your game I guess? Sylvester flipped the script on the turntables, Gummy Soul's Amerigo Gazaway turns in one of the best-executed videos to ever come out of the Nashville hip-hop scene — shit's poppin', am I right? But seriously, the falsetto hook and stone-cold truth of "I Can't Get off of the Facebook," the graphics ... the motherfuckin' dance steps! The shit's tight. And true. [Update: Video's fixed, thanks for the heads up Wally!]
* In less jovial news, Young Buck is going to prison. The feds also took his house. That's a bummer. The up-side? "Morning Show" catches Buck in top form.
* A big shout out to YouTuber DeepNdaSouth for posting Nashville rap pioneer Pistol's 1994 Ruthless Records album Hittin' Like a Bullet. Also, props for having a downright amazing YouTube channel. Holy shit, there are some deep, deep cuts in there.
* And to close it out on an extra funky note and start your weekend off the right way, here's AJ and the Jiggawatts' new EP Don't Mess With Me. Mess with it, mofos. Dirty, down-low funk like this doesn't come around every day, and if you're grilling out and tipping a few back this weekend, you need to have it pumpin' on your stereo. The release party is next Friday at The Basement.
