When The Spin caught Century Club opening Epic Ditch's EP release show at The Basement back in February, we described their sound as "angular power-pop" that is "not quite as jangly as The Only Ones but not quite as drunk as The Replacements." In an email to the Cream, however, CC guitarist Ryan Ervin referred to his outfit simply as "white guy guitar rock." Six of one, half a dozen of the other, am I right?

As noted in that afore-linked Spin, Century Club rose from the ashes of East Nashville's long-reigning white-guy-guitar-rock power trio, The Carter Administration — CC's lineup is two-thirds the same as that of the Carters. Now, Century Club is releasing their debut EP — with the the appropriately Caucasian-sounding title Keep It in the Fairway — and they're giving it away for free at their Bandcamp page. With lyrics like "I got drunk in the parking lot, talking about my heavy-metal past," the six-song Fairway is rife with the (to recycle an adjective) angular, mangled-pop sort of indie rock that made The Carter Administration such a comfortable fixture at The 5 Spot all the way back in the Aughts. The EP also features the more subdued "Dazed and Defused," not to mention a cover of the Wipers tune "Over the Edge." Wipers, of course, were that awesome Portland-based post-punk/proto-grunge band from the '80s that heavily influenced loads of folks, from outfits like Nirvana (hurrah!) all the way over to Hot Water Music (shrug).

Back to the point. Keep It in the Fairway was recorded, mixed and mastered by Jeremy "The Steve Albini of East Nashville" Ferguson at his Battle Tapes fortress. Stream all of Fairway below, or download it for free right here. "The next live appearance by Century Club," Ervin tells us, "will be June 7 at The 5 Spot, with Tower Defense and Chrome Pony." Oh, and hear the original version of Wipers' "Over the Edge" after the jump, because it's great.
