Here's how renowned Irish folk singer (and current Nashvillian) Maura O'Connell described Declan O'Rourke, in an email alerting us to O'Rourke's performance tonight at the Bluebird Cafe:
He is a phenomenal writer, singer, musician and entertainer. I can't do justice to his talent with words. I don't say that very often, but in this case it is true.
When someone of O'Connell's stature says that about a fellow Irish folkie, we pay attention. After we learned that he's been referred to as the Irish Leonard Cohen, our curiosity was further piqued. And when we read that The Jam's Paul Weller, when asked what song of the last 20 years he most wished he'd written, chose O'Rourke's "Galileo (Someone Like You)"? You know we were sure as hell going to check it out.
So we did just that (see video above), and it's downright gorgeous. The "Irish Leonard Cohen" tag might be reductive, but it's pretty spot-on — and high praise indeed. O'Rourke plays at 9 p.m. Look for a guest appearance by McConnell.
