Well, this is a bummer. An epic bummer. Local DJ and radio host Curtis Senior, the Scooby half of WUBT 101.1 FM's The Dolewite & Scooby Show passed away on Saturday. The show has been a fixture on the local airwaves for over a decade, Scooby an integral part of local hip-hop and DJ culture, a really good dude and a great radio personality. I didn't know him well — a longtime listener, first-time caller sorta situation — but he was always a pleasure to run into when our crazy schedules happened to overlap, and from the looks of my newsfeed there were A LOT of people who felt the same way. But more than anything, his absence will be felt on my radio, where he's been a staple of my pre-club ritual for years, the soundtrack to a million treks across town on a mission see some music. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Senior's friend, local filmmaker Ray Zate has re-cut some footage from last year's Stix Izza documentary Building the Highway to Mars in remembrance. You can watch the footage after the jump.

Epic bummer is right.

I met Scooby about three years ago at a party at former co-worker's house. Great guy. We hit it off talking about basketball. He was a Pistons fan, I was a Cavs fan. This was in the LeBron Cleveland era. Scooby and I got a little rivalry going, exchanged contact info, and we texted each other a couple times that year when the Pistons played the Cavs.

When LeBron ditched Cleveland, I heard from Scooby. We hadn't texted each other in over a year. The text is still on my phone. "Hey man, this is Scooby from 101.1, the die-hard Pistons fan you met at Inga's. How are you dealing with this LeBron treachery?"

I gave him the standard Cavs-fan rant, and he commiserated with me. "I think so too," he texted. "It's a cowardly way out. He may get a ring but is the value really going to be the same?"

I thought it was so cool that well over a year after meeting me at a party and sharing a text or two, he still remembered and thought to check in with me.

My condolences to his family, and his 101.1 family.

And to Scooby: I put you in my iPhone contact list as "Scooby Detroit." And I'm going to keep you in there. I may not get any more texts from you, and LeBron may be tearing it up with the Heat now. But everytime the Pistons play the Cavs, I'm going to think of you.
