Paul Burch and Hot-Jazz Multi-instrumentalist Enzo Mucci Tonight at Family Wash

Posted by Jim Ridley on Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 5:02 PM

Paul Burch you know, or should: He was a cornerstone of the honky-tonk renaissance that turned around Lower Broadway’s fortunes in the early ‘90s and enjoyed a stint in country-soul philharmonic Lambchop, before making a series of brilliant records that split the difference between Luke the Drifter and King of America. His latest, Words of Love, a dashed-off tip of the hat to Buddy Holly on what would have been the Texas rocker’s 75th birthday, captures the snotty force and stripped-for-speed immediacy of the originals without sounding like a Gary Busey tribute band.

Now testing new material for an album later this year, he’s in the midst of a residency every Wednesday through February at East Nashville’s Family Wash, backed this week by the stellar duo of Fats Kaplin and Chris Scruggs. Tonight he’ll be joined by a special guest: French hot-jazz multi-instrumentalist Enzo Mucci, who’s been playing of late with Florida-born French sensation Cecile McLorin Salvant, “une jeune chanteuse de jazz.” Not to be missed, especially if you’ve always longed for a Ray Price-Django Reinhardt jam session.

Again, that's 8:30 p.m. at Family Wash, 2038 Greenwood Ave. — free.

Great show in a great room — I think there were more musicians (and music writers) in the crowd than there were onstage. I wish it had been recorded, so I could go back and hear more of Chris Scruggs (whose leads were phenomenal) and Jen Gunderman (who supplied a rolling groove all night, whether on Fender Rhodes, roller-rink organ or accordion).
