Wanda Jackson Plays 'Riot in Cell Block No. 9' at Marathon Music Works [Fresh Vid]

Posted by D. Patrick Rodgers on Wed, Feb 8, 2012 at 8:00 AM

The Spin caught Miss Wanda Jackson at Marathon Music Works' kickoff show back in November, and so, apparently, did a handful of camera operators. As you'll see directly above or over at Digital Bohemia's Vimeo page, Jackson's opening number with her backing band (Heath Haynes and his Hi-Dollars) was the legendary Leiber and Stoller-penned "Riot in Cell Block No. 9." And that holler Wanda lets out right around the 1:35 mark? That was the level of steam she managed to muster all night long. I am not ashamed to say I grew tired of standing long before she showed any signs of fatigue. Wait ... should I be ashamed to say that? Whatever, I never claimed to have more energy and chutzpah than a spunky septuagenarian. Just watch the video. It's a good one.

Great video! Thanks for the heads-up. I was there thanks to the Nashville Scene/Cream (online) keeping me informed about where to go in Nashville. I read the info about the new venue and how to enter a contest and get free tickets to the Grand Opening. It was pretty cool when it was announced Wanda Jackson would be headlining the event. It's pretty cool too that Jack White did an amazing job bringing her out of obscurity and producing a great album for her. I've been following rock & roll since 1968 (when I saw Jimmi Hendrix when I was 14 years old...my braggin right) and never heard of the "Queen of Rockabilly" (who started out as a teenager touring with Elvis), now transcended to the "Queen of Rock & Roll" since her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum by Rosanne Cash. I missed that news too but I'm finally catching up. Hey, can I refer you "Spin Dudes" to a Peter Cooper article (see Tennessean/online today) about the first Grammy that was awarded to a Nashville folk musician... a blind black blues street musician. Seems Music City, USA has had a long history of neglecting some of its best music making folks/talents. That's why I am having fun rocking the boat and trying to stir up more awareness about pathetic old practices on and about the Music Row area, when the rest of the world is missing out on some of the best music being made in "Tune Town". I've been on the streets/in the clubs/ scouring the honky tonks discovering some great talent and been wondering where the Music Row execs are. / Thanks for the help "Spin Dudes"! I highly recommend you try and get the clip Peter Cooper has attached to his article today and pass it on to your watchers/readers/listeners. We are all just one big music family here aren't we? And yeah, I know, there are always going to be some dysfunctional beings in all families. I'm trying to deal with that in Music City, USA and be extra selective and hang with the best music folks (and good people) I can find. / It was the 4th time I got to see Wanda Jackson performing "live". I love screaming along with her on this song. OH YEAH!!!
