The Devious Angels, 'Odelay' [Fresh Vid]

Posted by D. Patrick Rodgers on Wed, Feb 1, 2012 at 8:00 AM

Jon Decious. That name ring a bell? It should to fans of mid- to late-Aughts Nashville-based pop-punk trios, as Decious was once The Pink Spiders' bass-slinging southpaw. Of course, after the Spiders parted ways the first time, Decious decided to dip fully into the world of country with his Dixie Whiskey. Upon The Pink Spiders' reformation, they replaced Decious with local glam-pop glitter clown Brandon Jazz.

And while Decious still toils in the world of country music, his latest outfit is called The Devious Angels — probably a nod to Gram Parsons' Grievous Angel ... along with Decious' haircut definitely being a nod to Gram Parsons — and also features singer Steevie Steeves. Cream contributor Seth Graves directed the above video for the Angels' "Odelay" (probably not an intentional Beck reference), which was partially shot in onetime experimental-music bastion and current smoky dive Betty's. As you'll hear in the fiddle and steel strains and the lovelorn lyrics, Decious doesn't seem to be approaching the country thing from an ironic angle whatsoever. It's earnest as hell. So there you have it.

Terrible. Aping Gram Parsons whilst singing a very bland country "type" song is horrendous. Get your own style, dude.

I wouldn't at all say they are aping Gram Parsons. There is a bit of influence, particularly aesthetically but the term 'aping' is a little extreme. I personally would prefer that young country songwriters be influenced by Gram Parsons than just about anything that has happened on music row for the last few decades.

No; they're not aping Parsons, except in look. They're aping a combo of David Rawlings and Guy Clark. Never seen THAT before..

I dig it. I don't normally love "country 'type' songs" but this one is catchy and was definitely worth the listen. Nice pacing on the vid as well--good stuff all around!

I might not buy it (cuzz I'm always saving money...since way back before the economy went bad for the umpteenth time) but I'd listen to it for free on the radio (((((((WSM could do better by searching out for better songs to send around the world...when listening to that station gets too much to take, I got to switch back to NPR for a break from crappy modern day country music))))))). / my 2 cents: I like the music and song/verse...especailly hearing the banjo (Who's doing that?). The music is kept simple and the video doesn't look like a lot of money was wasted on making something really stupid like the stuff I have seen on CMT and GACtv. The voices are pleasing to listen to = better than some of those voices I've heard aournd the honky tonks in Music City, USA.

i don't understand what kind of blabbering deaf idiot would deem this a country "type" song, what the hell else is it if it's not country, yoda? also, have you guys ever listened to gram parsons before? a) he's a wonderful person to be inspired by and b) outside of the aesthetic and perhaps the overall genre, there's nothing really to compare. grow a pair, dork wads, this stuff is the real deal.

Decious should stick to the white belts and pink glasses, this shit sucks even worse than that!

Stupid remarks by stupid people--have you even listened to the song?? These two performers have it all together but have to put up with people that probably cant carry a tune trashing them--grow up and listen for a change-and down the road when they make the big time dont want to hear you then say--"I always thought they were good"
