'Nashville Sucks,' Says Some Guy

Well. Someone certainly has an ax to grind. A bone to pick. A beef to ... beef. The above track, labeled simply "Nashville," was pulled from a Soundcloud page belonging to user NashvilleSucks, and it's said user's only posted track. Aside from the tags "Nashville," "Tennessee," "TN," "Sucks" and "Acoustic" and the song's lyrics — which you can see block-quoted after the jump — you'll find absolutely no information on this mysterious malcontent. But as you'll hear, the track has a MOR-ish, active-rocky, post-grungy, Scott Stappian sort of marble-mouthed malaise to it, and it's peppered intermittently with gravelly bursts of Puddle of Muddy growling. It's got the boldly tepid pick-strum-pick-strum progression and vocal melody of a Nickelback or 3 Doors Down deep cut, but with the aggro-tude of a Disturbed.

But enough with the sonics of the tune. It's the message that gives it its bloggability. The songwriter — and I think I'll call him Rusty Nichols, just because — clearly has had a run-in or two with the Nashville Machine. "Don't bother singing your own songs," laments Nichols as he sings his own song, "It's only worse." He goes on to note that rent is cheap in the ghetto — as I imagine it likely is in virtually every metropolitan area across the country — and that starving, desperate, coin-craving performers languish in the rain. A sad tale, indeed, and one that makes me wonder just who the scribe behind the song is. Are you Rusty Nichols? If so, what's your story? If not, what do you think of the tune? Does Nashville, in fact, suck so vigorously and deeply, as Nichols claims it does? Thoughts? Hat-tip goes to local songstress Caitlin Rose, who passed this hot track along to us.

Lyrics [sic]:

if you wanna make your dreams come true
there's a place musicians always do
so move to Nashville

they'll put your name up there in shining lights
and everyone in the crowd thinks you're alright
so move to Nashville

but here nobody pays you what you're worth
don't bother singing your own songs its only worse
i bet nobody told you
don't even think that you're dreams are coming true

rent's cheap in the ghetto if you like
a tip jar for pay is all you'll find
so move to Nashville

street performers playing for your change
desperate and starving in the rain
so move to Nashville

but here nobody pays you what you're worth
don't bother singing your own songs its only worse
i bet nobody told you
don't even think that you're dreams are coming true
run as fast as you can from Nashville
