Slade, “Merry Xmas Everybody”
I spent two Christmases in the English countryside, which is where I was introduced to this song, and oh I just fell in love instantly. All of my British friends were sick of it and had been since their childhoods, but because I wasn’t forced to listen to it dozens of times a year every year since 1973, I was still capable of finding it fun and charming. Still do! But ask me again in 40 years, maybe I’ll have tired of it by then.
Mariah Carey, “All I Want for Christmas is You”
Pretty girl sings cheeseball good song about love and Christmas. It’s now reminding me to watch Love, Actually as soon as possible.
Traditional or Cartman, “O Holy Night”
Jesus curveball! Though I celebrate a wholly secular holiday, there are still quite a few savior-themed songs that put me in the holiday mood. “O Holy Night” is my favorite, though I only accept renditions performed by choirs as legitimate. I am also fine with South Park's version.
Honorable Mentions:
Wham!, “Last Christmas”
A classic Christmas song that has nothing to do with Christmas whatsoever. Well played, boys!
Judy Garland, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
Have you ever listened to the original lyrics? The gist of the song is that everything is terrible, and will always be terrible, but you may as well enjoy the holiday because the bullshit is gonna start right back up again soon enough.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
