So I just received an email from local polymath Dan Sommers. You know this guy? Once upon a time, he was the drummer for now-defunct indie rockers Hotpipes, who allegedly have a posthumous LP in the works (hear what they've got thus far right here; stuff's good). Well, Sommers — like so many drummers with that dreaded Frontman Complex — doesn't draw the line at merely bashing the skins. He also plays guitars, keys, a tiny little thing called a pocket trumpet and much more. Hell, he also plays with local outfits My So-Called Band and Poly, and next month, he'll be singing in a local presentation of the music from Les Miserables at Mercy Lounge.

But Sommers didn't email me to brag about all the stuff he's good at. He emailed to let me know about how his solo project, Happy Little Trees, will be playing a show Saturday, Dec. 3, at The Basement along with Poly and Frances Foundation. The show will celebrate the release of Happy Little Trees' debut 7-inch — "I've Been on the Fence but God I'm Getting Tired" b/w "You'd Make a Great B-Side." You can already listen to the two tunes below or via Happy Little Trees' Bandcamp page. It's busy, schizophrenic, power-poppy indie-rock stuff. It's definitely at least mildly reminiscent of Hotpipes' material, and the hooky bits remind me somewhat of all the power-poppy '90s "Super" bands — the 'Chunk, the 'Drag and the 'Grass. The 7-inch was recorded at Battletapes, and there will be a limited run of 100 "glow-in-the-dark vinyl pressed at United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN, with a handmade, hand-glued, hand-written, hand-stamped, hand-numbered cover constructed from 13 different papers and cutouts. Each cover is unique with its own color combinations." How do you like that? Have a listen below, or go ahead and buy it via Bandcamp for $6.
