Steve Cross' Nashville Under the Covers Nov. 20 at Mercy Lounge Will Be Seriously Meta

There's certainly no dearth of promising local shows this weekend. Tomorrow night alone, electronic duo Sub Shanti will celebrate the release of Space Zen at Mai (see Maloney's feature), mirthful hip-hop outfit The Greater Good will release their Rare Form EP at The 5 Spot (see Lance's pick), and rambling Americanist Rayland Baxter will play along with Birdcloud and The Kingston Springs at Exit/In (see Steve's pick). And from Wanda to a Lambchop music video shoot, the sonic cave that is this weekend offers many a gem for us local-rock spelunkers.

But we'd be absolutely remiss if we didn't mention the most meta show that's going down all weekend. The Scene/Cream's longtime freelance shutterbug Steve Cross will turn 30 this weekend (Gross! That's so old!), and he's throwing himself a little party to stave off the depression. Actually, it's not just a party for himself: The show, which takes place Sunday night at Mercy Lounge, will benefit YEAH! (that's Youth Empowerment through Arts & Humanities and the force behind such great programs as the Tennessee Teens Rock and Roll Camp and the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp). The bill will feature all local bands — both familiar familiar faces and newcomers — including Diarrhea Planet, Birdcloud, Tower Defense, Matt Friction and the Bored Orphans, Powerbrrrd and Sugar Sk*-*lls. Oh, but there's a catch! The locals will all be covering tunes by fellow locals. Say what?! That's right! Kind of reminds me of the Cream's second anniversary party and this one other show before that ... but I don't recall the details and can't find a link for that one.

Want to see who will be covering what? Check out the details after the jump or via the Facebook event page. Hey Steve, for your birthday present, I promise to stop saying "Shut up, Steve" — and tweeting #ShutUpSteve — for one entire month. Unless the opportunity presents itself and it's really funny. Happy birthday, old man!

Steve Cross is really dreading turning 30, so to ease the pain he booked a show at Mercy Lounge featuring Nashville bands covering other Nashville bands and it's gonna benefit the YEAH! TN summer music camps (SGRRC and TNTRC)!

DIARRHEA PLANET (covering JEFF..., Meemaw, Kintaro and other top secret things)

MATT FRICTION & THE BORED ORPHANS (covering top secret things)

POWERBRRRD (covering PUJOL, Pink Spiders, and Taylor Swift)

BIRDCLOUD (covering top secret things...)

TOWER DEFENSE (ft. members of Apollo Up!/Take the Power Back/Fox Core) (covering The Carter Administration and other top secret things..)

SUGAR SK*_*LLS (Ben Marcantel of Hands Off Cuba- makin' noisey 8 bit jams out of your favorite Nashville local tunes)

Sun. Nov 20th, 9pm, $5 minimum donation
(Past YEAH! volunteers who wear their t-shirts get in FREE!)

Update: Matt Friction and the Bored Orphans had to drop off the bill.
