So there’s this girl. Her name is Jess Rice. Jess is the muscle behind Hear Now Publicity, and we at the Scene/Cream get as much if not more contact from her as any other reputable publicist in this world. She's usually pushing the likes of The Kingston Springs, The Dirt Daubers, Jim Lauderdale and the band I’m about to plug: Harrison Hudson.

To us journalistic types, publicists are both a necessary evil and the bane of our existence. Information is never delivered on a need-to-know basis. It’s tossed at you at all hours of the day via email like chunks of SPAM from a homeless man on Lower Broad. That said, I ain’t mad at Jess for talking me into listening to this record.

Harrison Hudson has a record called American Thunder that came out yesterday and that you can stream here. Not only is Harrison Hudson a guy, it's also basically the name of the band. And contrary to what their press release suggests (seriously, never pay attention to press releases), keep “the spirit of the gritty early days of rock n roll” it does not. Keeping the spirit of modern throwback, straightforward, unpretentious indie pop with smooth production, charming vocals and songs that slip their proverbial hand down the front of your pants and molest you in a way you weren’t expecting to enjoy before you even realize it’s happening — that's more what it’s like. Oh, they occasionally break into a dirty riff in a minor key, but who doesn’t? No. It’s that aforementioned groove that gives these guys their juice.

They’re playing an official CD release tonight at The Basement with the Lonely H and JD Simo.
