He was also in Nashville last week.
According to his tweets and a Facebook status update, Welsh arrived in Nashville last Sunday, Oct. 2, and departed for Chi-town — where he’d planned on seeing his former band perform at the city’s RiotFest — on Tuesday, Oct. 4, four days before his death.
In a Facebook update posted on Oct. 1, Welsh — who in the last decade had forged a career as painter (see his work here) — said “I'm off to Nashville to be photographed working on a big painting by a very good friend of mine.”
Judging by this tweet, said local photographer is presumably one Jordan Vittitow, who tweeted yesterday at Welsh, “For the first time ever, my heart is officially broken. I saw you less than a week ago, but I'll see you again soon.”
Kind of a cryptic communique at first glance — Twitter is morbid. But not nearly as cryptic as the tweet Welsh himself sent out on Sept. 26, prophesying, “Dreamt I died in Chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). Need to write my will today.”
Welsh’s body was found Saturday afternoon by staff of the Raffaello Hotel, where he’d been staying. The Chicago Tribune reports that, while toxicology results are pending, police are suspecting the death was the result of a drug overdose — prescription drugs and a Ziploc bag containing a substance they believe is heroin were found in Welsh’s hotel room. Super weird, and really sad.
RIP, Mikey Welsh.
