You guys familiar with Swans? They're the Michael Gira-fronted post-punk band that created most of their output in the '80s and '90s and were hugely influential on, well, everything you've heard since 1995 that has a lot of gnarly, chaotic dissonance. I wrote a Critic's Pick on them for this week's forthcoming dead-tree edition. I'm not really supposed to do this (Shhh!), but I'm going to prematurely share a little snippet from my pick:
Do you like post-punk music? All right. Well then think of your favorite brutal, ominous post-punk artist. Maybe you’re thinking of The Fall. Or, possibly, you’re thinking of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds or Grinderman. Strong candidates, to be sure. But when it comes to carefully orchestrated dissonance and the thinking man’s aggression, you just can’t get any better than New York City’s Swans. And last year’s My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky — Swans’ first record in 14 years — isn’t some half-assed, lethargic attempt at recapturing the sonic viciousness of frontman Michael Gira’s ’80s output.
So let's give away some tickets to this thing! Swans play this Saturday, Sept. 17, at Mercy Lounge. Tickets are $17.50-$20. But not if you're clever. Come up with the most entertaining caption you can for the above image. Remember to include your email address in the appropriate field. We won't publish it, but we'll need it in order to contact our winner. We'll pick our favorite caption and contact the winner around noon on Friday, so be sure to check your email. OK ... go!
Update: We have our winner. Thanks for playing!
