Pitchfork reported earlier today that, as part of a big ol' fall tour, former puppet master Merill Garbus' loopy, intricately sloppy, ukulele-and-floor-tom project tUnE-yArDs comes to Exit/In on Friday, Sept. 30. Tickets are $12 and you can buy them on the internet right now.

Perhaps you caught Garbus' interview with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot on their WBEZ radio show Sound Opinions, which aired on WPLN last night. From where I'm sitting, the nice thing about that interview, aside from what an obviously thoughtful and gracious person Garbus comes across as, is that you can't see the face paint and the rando capitalization, two things that as a rule just bug me for reasons that probably aren't any good. Two things that don't bug me are looping pedals and powerhouse vocals, of which Garbus has two of the former and, thanks to those, several layers of the latter at any given time.

Another nice thing about the interview is how she walks through the sample-building process for the song "Powa" as she's doing it. Clicking pedals here and hitting things there. Nerdy! And quite good! Here's what that looks like live:

And just for fun, here's the face-painty video for "Bizness," also off this new record w h o k i l l, which, enough with the whimsical typography already. OK, fine, I really like it.
