Radio Free Nashville Hopes to Move to a Stronger Frequency, Seeks Donations

So 107.1 WRFN-LPFM, or Radio Free Nashville, is — as the "LP" in those call letters denotes — a low-power station. According to station organizer Ginny Welsch — who sent the below email along to the folks at Grimey's, among others — Radio Free Nashville just might have the opportunity to apply for "formerly unavailable third-adjacent freqencies," or, basically, a clean frequency where RFN won't sound all fuzzy and weak. Wouldn't that be nice, considering the brutal beating independent radio has taken this year?

While we wait to find out if LPFMs will be allowed to apply for those aforementioned frequencies, let's have a look at what Welsch has to say. See the rest of the email after the jump.

Hey folks -

With the passage of the Community Radio Act earlier this year, and the subsequent opening of formerly unavailable third-adjacent frequencies, RFN may have an opportunity to change to a clean frequency, one with no other station on it and no interference, that will greatly improve our reach into Nashville and beyond. The FCC is meeting today to determine if LPFMs like our will be allowed to apply for the frequencies and take precedence over already filed translator applications to make the move.

If this is approved, we have to move FAST to get all the paperwork and tech stuff done. The filing window will be very small. And we will need money to do it.

Please make a donation if you can to help with this, and put the word out to everyone you know who loves RFN and ask them to donate TODAY so that we can get the ball rolling. You can donate through Paypal, or send a check to 725 Wildview Drive, Nashville, TN 37211.

I could also use some technical assistance in preparing the application, so if you have expertise in this area and can help we put the exhibits together, please let me know ASAP.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. There are no other frequencies in Nashville where we could move to improve our signal. This is it. So we need to act fast and be ready to file the minute the window opens.

Thanks. ONWARD!!

FYI - sounds like they need a few thousands bucks to get to where they want to in the FM range. I, for one, would like something to fill the massive whole WRVU left in good tuneage. Can WRFN do that? We won't know unless we help.

well, if I knew they needed $3,000 I'd be more likely to donate some, as opposed to something like $25,000. that way we'd at least know what they're up against!
