Protomen Release Act I on Vinyl Tomorrow, Celebrate at 12th & Porter

Old school!

As understandably pumped as we are about tonight's Sebastian Speaks show, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that a local show of equal stature is going down tomorrow at 12th & Porter when The Protomen throw down in the name of the long-awaited vinyl release of their first record. If you've never been to a Proto-show when it's in full throes of geekdom, this one stands to be their biggest local gig since their 2008 release show at Mercy.

From the Facebook event:

On this night, The Protomen will release their long-awaited 12" LP of their 2005 debut album The Protomen. This first pressing of 977 will be split blue/red, include a 22" x 22" foldout poster with never-before-seen artwork as well as a 10" x 10" stencil. This limited version will also have the original endings of multiple jams. No future pressings will be the same. The LP will not be available online until after this show, depending on how many remain. And...this will be a LIVE DVD SHOOT!

A stencil and original endings! Yowza! But, no, seriously, that sounds pretty cool.

For reference, it's been six years since The Protomen released their self-titled debut. Six long years in which they gained and lost somewhere in the area of 700 members (maybe it was more like 20), graduated from playing a three-quarters full The End to selling out Mercy Lounge, released a second record, and acquired a fan base so fervent that small island nations should be worried if the band ever decides they need to overthrow a government.

I've been told that the show is nearly sold out, so if you want to get in, you're going to have to buy your tickets in advance. You can thank the people driving in from as far as Oklahoma for that. But, if you don't make it out on Saturday, there's a hell of a lot of material from the band coming down the pipeline in the near future:

* Remember when a guy raised $33,000 on Kickstarter to make a documentary about the band? That's still a thing that's happening. The filmmaker has been shooting them for months, so it's only a matter of time before a narrative emerges and the film comes together.

* Remember that Queen cover show back in December? Word on the street is that it was recorded and is being prepped for release sometime in the near future. Not unlike the iPhone 5, we know it exists, we're just not sure when we can buy one. Until then, here's a picture of Neil from Cheer Up Charlie Daniels wearing a spandex unitard.

* On the subject of cover songs, the band has been working on a covers record for what seems like forever. I don't know what's going to be on it or if it's coming out any time soon, but if there's any justice in the world, it'll include this mash-up of “Mother” and “Invincible.”

And beyond that? Assuredly more cyberpunk goodies to come. No matter how you feel about "nerd music" or theatricality in rock 'n' roll, you have to admire their hustle.
