With a subhed reading, "Jack White, Kings of Leon, the Black Keys, Ke$ha and Taylor Swift have all moved here — this is why" — wonder where they heard that — the feature profiles Nashville in five parts: venues, bars, restaurants, clothes and record stores. Stone gathered quotes from locals and semi-locals including Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, my boy Patrick Carney, Nathan Followill, Cage the Elephant's Lincoln Parish and ambassadress — by transitive property — Karen Elson regarding the hottest spots in town. The Ryman, Exit/In, 12th & Porter, The 5 Spot and Station Inn all landed mentions in the venues department, while Springwater, Mas Tacos, Arnold's, Losers and Patterson House were mentioned in the restaurants and bars categories. What local music retailer was unanimously agreed upon as "the spot for indie and vintage nuggets"? Where else? Only one of Rolling Stone's "Best Record Stores in the USA," Grimey's. Well, Elson obviously prefers a different joint.
Also, in case you didn't know, "daytime booze is a time-honored tradition in Nashville." When I wondered aloud, "Where isn't it?", fellow Creamer Adam Gold responded astutely: "I mean ... Salt Lake City?"

yeah.ok.
Lots of "Yay!" from me on this. It's easily the second-best rundown of Nashville hot spots, after GOOP.
http://goop.com/newsletter/74/en/
Also, is that the whole article? Did they really highlight that Nashville has the best music scene by talking about restaurants?
There are no local bands, only private clubs and yogurt at Fido's. Celebrities! They're just like us!
Yeah, amazing to me how these guys suck the d*cks of these folks that haven't held Tennessee license's for 3 months yet. The reason these boners are coming here is the scene these local bands have built.
Those pricks from Kings of Neon didn't even want to be associated with Nashville.
Now everyone wants on the wagon.
Local rules, posers suck.
Arnold's is great...but Prince's is better. And has a better list of patrons: Yo La Tengo, Arcade Fire, me...
who the fck cares where patrick carney likes to eat or see bands?- how many restaurants and venues has he been able to try since he's been here?
black keys, the ettes, keesha, taylor swift, cage the who?, jack white- non-locals.
maybe the Nashville Scene should write an article about the best venues in columbus o-hi-o, just grab a phone book and call the most recent out of town addition to whatever that suck ass pro team's name is they have up there.
@Jack - Yeah, kind of shocked about Mercy Lounge (best example of a rock club in town that is able to book national-level acts on a consistent basis so that our weekends aren't total fucking embarrassments), The End, and even Local Honey being left out. I always like to see some 5 Spot love, though.

Sounds great!
i was wondering if folks could find a way to hate on this. you guys never let me down!!! HOW COULD THEY LEAVE OUT (insert my personal favorite place/band here)!?!?!?!
I am outraged that they did not name [my favorite band] and [my favorite venue]! Also, [the restaurant I prefer] serves a better [food item] than [the restaurant that is mentioned]! And, how could they not have mentioned [local business]?! This is bullshit.
Oh wow...Guess who never heard Pat McLaughlin and the band play at Mervin Louque's Douglas Corner??? Can I get an AMEN on this comment???
I'd just like to note that Taylor Swift moved here (to Hendersonville, if you want to be picky) when she was 14. It's not like she's part of a newly discovered trend.
glad we have all the members only clubs now. that epitomizes those dorks from queens of neon and the black striped keys. I met Ryan Adams at 12th and Porter before, and Josh Rouse at 3rd and Lindsley. Where you think Willie, Waylon and the boys hung in the heydays, not some private dick club.
um. so this article is really not so much about Nashville, but the out-of-towners that are moving in and what they like.
i agree that this is bull. nashville is definitely not the best music scene in the country - and to be clear, i will give my idea of music scene: local bands playing local bars/clubs/etc. when was the last time you saw jack white playing the springwater or betty's? i would have to say jack white, black keys, and kings of leon, don't count. that being said, what was the last really good local show you went to? how about the one before that and the one before that? in fact -- someone please name 10 rock bands FROM nashville who currently play on a frequent basis IN nashville. if we can't come up with 10, it 'aint a very good scene... if we can't come up with 50, it 'aint the best one in the country.
my 2 cents.
i agree that this is bull. nashville is definitely not the best music scene in the country. and to be fair, i will give my idea of music scene: local bands playing local bars/clubs/etc. when was the last time you saw jack white playing the springwater or betty's? i would have to say jack white, black keys, and kings of leon don't count. that being said, what was the last really good local show you went to? how about the one before that and the one before that? in fact -- someone please name 10 rock bands FROM nashville who currently play on a frequent basis IN nashville. if we can't come up with 10, it 'aint a very good scene... if we can't come up with 50, it 'aint the best one in the country.
I am proud we have enough stuff here to debate . Try searching stuff half as good in any number of cities as big or bigger that Nashville . We are no longer the fat girls at prom just happy to be here . Enough said.
I agree with neildoe and mr. nikkydix very well said.
But I've seen some great shows in the last year including the ettes, turbo fruits, the cold stares, pujol, the honeymoon thrillers, run with bulls, eastern block, the worsties, and a couple others. I'd say we got ourselves 10 anyways, and a few of these will break big eventually if they hang.
but agree with the other person, rolling stone worships kings of leon, kesha (horrible), dead weather, black keys and white stripes- so that's why they gave it to nashville. The Cold Stares would sonically destroy either of those duos live, and I'll take the honeymoon thrillers over KOL. But...no one outside of town probably knows either.
Glad we got mentioned, sad they didn't focus on Nashville instead of the rock star immigrants.
@Larry, @Mike - I honestly, really and truly, was trying NOT to be a hater. And I know not everything about our pretty pretty city can be included on one page, but c'mon, the methodology IS kind of funny. We have the best music scene in the whole US of A...and yet there is no mention of a single band, other than the artists they asked. Each and every one of these people are entitled to their (genreally quite good!) opinions, but I fail to see how having a kickass meat and three is supposed to entice people to care more about Nashville music than, say, a musician.
I can't name 50 great bands in any city. I can't name 50 current bands that are worth a fck at all. NYC, LA and Nashville and the tri-fecta- I think all we did was beat out the other two cities. Not 50 good bands at Bonnaroo.
Sorry, but if you come to town and ask a local the best place to eat, regardless of their preference- you'll end up somewhere great. You ask some out of town rock star and you'll get somewhere they've heard mentioned.
well i only moved here eight or nine years ago, so i guess i'm not local either so i'll just stay out of it until the legislation for 'years you must have lived here to be called local and not an immigrant' passes.
this is extremes, but I don't think they were talking about you larry. I understand the point. black keys are in this months edition for moving to town...how well do they really know the city.
where is rick flair from, all that really matters.
I think Nashville is an incredible place to live. I got here in the 90's against my will and have slowly grown into the place. Lived in north, south, east, west nashville, and downtown over the years.
I am sorry but I can't get behind this article. It says nothing about what's it really like here, and basically name drops the places that are already crawling with tourists and hipsters*, not to mention a bunch of artists we couldn't care less about**.
* Grimey's gets a free pass. It is the happiest place on earth.
** Not into Stripes or Keys, but Jack White seems pretty cool. I like having him around.

just off top of my head. dono how many that is. i didn't include any "famous" ones like black keys or jack white or paramore or KOL or ke$ha or whatever. please suck it
nashville forever
Someone recently moved to Nashville that has sold over 75 million albums in his rock career. There is no one in the city that hasn't heard one of his songs. Jonathan Cain/Journey. You think they give a flying camel dump where he eats/goes out?
This is about Rolling Stone trying to suck the toes of the hipsters as usual. Don't fool yourself folks, if the Black Keys and the Kings of Leon packed up and called Atlanta the new "it", RS would have named Atlanta.
If the Black Keys say they are doing the Republican campaign song for 2012, then I'm pretty sure as long as they are in Nashville, Rolling Stone won't pick us for anything else.
All about hipsters. All fluff, no content.
@NASHYFOREV Jesus. No wonder they voted for us, that is biggest piece of shite white sunglass wearing, volvo driving, red bull drinking rolling stone style hipster music list of local music I've ever seen.
any city that sites a band called "Syrian Nukes Over Disneyland" for a reason of having a great music scene should be immediately omitted.
Jack White came to town when it wasn't cool to be here. He's the only one that should get props.
Any article about Nashville's music scene that does not include even a mention of the great Jack Pearson or Jimmy Hall, Bekka Bramlett, Old Union, Mike Ferris, Bonnie Bramlett or Steve Cropper is not to be taken seriously. KOL aren't worthy to share a stage with any of them. Ke$ha, my ass.
also, buddy miller was named 'best side man'. the nature boy is from minnesota originally, i think, but he is a gator fan and the greatest world champion of all time, so that's all that matters to me. ha!
Just for the record, no one in Black Patch owns a pair of white sunglasses or drives a Volvo, nor do we have anything against those who do. I do drink those Jaeger and Red Bull shits from time to time, though. Thanks NASHYYFOREV! When has Rolling Stone gotten anything right in the past 15 years anyway? They're about as cutting edge as a butter knife.
Also, miss you too, Matt S.
So I would say the lightning100 is tops on the radio end of town- their contest to crown a local rock champ was fine tuned (pun intended) to 32 bands.
The Final Four bands were Ravello, Eastern Block, Newmatic and The Cold Stares. I was at the show- and I was very proud to be from Nashville (Franklin), best rock show I've seen in years, and it was packed in there. It certainly felt like a rock scene to me.
hahahaha you guys are the biggest bunch of haters that i have seen on a blog yet... Really thought most of you would be far too hip to read Rolling Stone anyway. This article was about a local scene (not national as to why Mercy wasn't mentioned). This was not about money or politics because none of the businesses mentioned were even interviewed much less approached about money. Most of you have no idea what it takes to be on the front lines of music. Much easier to talk shit about those who pit their heart and soul into making music than to make an impact on your own. Let me know when your work is mentioned in Rolling Stone (or any national magazine) and I'll be the first to congratulate you.
@good for nashville
So then why were Exit/In and The Ryman Mentioned? National acts play there too, right? It's cool that RS thinks we're cool. It's a drag that they have someone writing about it from behind a desk in New York. Duh.
Hey you Nashville bashers... leave! Please... Then perhaps we can enjoy a good moment for once. Best scene for music and best place to be an a%*hole.
