Your Guide to Record Store Day 2011: Special Releases, Great Escape, Grimey's, The Groove, Third Man & More [Updated]

MUSIC1111.jpg

Here it comes. Can you feel it? We’re but three days away from independent record stores' answer to Valentine’s Day. A day when the sort of consumerism that's being encouraged isn't all vapid gestures and greeting cards, but rather flesh-and-blood humans spending their hard-earned capital on physical copies of recorded music made and sold by other flesh-and-blood humans. Our old friend Internet has made music wonderfully accessible. It has also soundly thumped demand for The Physical Copy. But not amongst the devoted, and certainly not this Saturday. No torrents to unzip or RARs to unbutton here. This Saturday, the independent record store is king. It’s Record Store Day 2011 — just the fourth Record Store Day ever — and it’s taking place April 16 at record shops across the land.

After the jump you’ll find some lists I’ve put together. There’s a list of this year’s most enticing RSD-only releases — I picked the more noteworthy stuff from the master list — which includes reissues, special new releases, outtakes and live recordings from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Rolling Stones, 13th Floor Elevators, Television, Built to Spill, The dB's, Grinderman, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, New York Dolls, Queen, Nirvana, The Beach Boys, Raphael Saadiq, The Velvet Underground, The Yardbirds, Vivian Girls, Wild Flag and so much more. I also put together comprehensive round-ups of all the shindigs going down at local shops Grimey’s, The Groove, Third Man and The Great Escape. That includes sales, performances, film screenings and more. Follow me after the jump to see it all.

GREAT ESCAPE:

At both of Great Escape's Nashville-area locations — one at 5400 Charlotte Ave., the other at 111-B Gallatin Ave. N. in Madison — all used music will be 20 percent off. That includes LPs, CDs and cassettes. Both locations will also feature giveaways, marked-down new items, and plenty of the special RSD releases you'll be looking for. No live performances, as neither store has much of a spot for bands to play ever since the Broadway location shuttered. Good times and good tunes abound nonetheless. Both stores open at 9 a.m.

GRIMEY’S:

Nashville's flagship indie record shop kicks things off at 10 a.m., with RSD releases racked in the back parking lot. There will be a Save WRVU booth, beer from Yazoo, barbecue from the United Records folks and more, and those scamps Matt & Kim will swing by at 4 p.m. to kick it and sign copies of their "Block After Block" 7-inch. Performances are as follows:

11:30 a.m.: djb (DJ)
noon: April Smith and the Great Picture Show
12:30 p.m.: Bob Irwin (DJ)
1:00 p.m.: The Great Book of John
1:30 p.m.: The Record Wranglers (DJ)
2:00 p.m.: Deadstring Brothers
2:30 p.m.: Pete Wilson from Nashville Jumps (DJ)
3:00 p.m.: Carnivores
3:30 p.m.: Nashville's Dead (DJ)
4:00 p.m.: Hunx and His Punks
4:30 p.m.: Brother Dylan (DJ)
5:00 p.m.: Ben Hall
5:30 p.m.: The Gabe Dixon Band
6:00 p.m.: Heather Lose of Honky-Tonk Jukebox (DJ)
6:30 p.m.: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
7:00 p.m.: D-Funk (DJ)
7:15 p.m.: The Mattoid

There will also be three films screening downstairs in The Basement, showing in conjunction with the Nashville Film Festival. Broke*, a doc about the record industry — and really, what the record industry is turning into — will show at 12:30 p.m. Heavy Metal Picnic — a film from the makers of Heavy Metal Parking Lot that, well, appears to be a lot like Heavy Metal Parking Lot — will screen at 2 p.m., feat. a Q&A with the director. And finally, Better Than Something: Jay Reatard, a doc about the late Memphis punk-rocker, will show at 4:30 p.m. (I got the chance to screen Better Than Something, and I was absolutely impressed. More coverage on that to come.)

THE GROOVE:

For those who still haven't checked out The Groove's relatively new location at 1103 Calvin Ave. — just off Gallatin Ave. and next-door to one of my favorite meat-and-three joints, Tom's Elite — here's a prime opportunity to get to it. Commencing at 10 a.m., the day's festivities will once again be hosted by Cream cohort, Chris Crofton Show host and prolific caffeine-fueled jester Chris Crofton. Aside from official RSD releases, everything in the store will be 15 percent off, with discounted vinyl and CDs outside. There will be performances from the following:

Hacienda
The Coolin’ System
Magic In Threes
Bad Cop
Evan P. Donohue
Faux Ferocious
The Shakes
Nite Nite
Diarrhea Planet
Mom & Dad
Chris Crofton (MC and performance)
The Record Wranglers of Sundazed Records (DJ)
DJ His & Hers of Microfiche Records (DJ)
Nashville’s Dead (DJ)

Reps from United Record Pressing, Tennessee Teens Rock 'n' Roll Camp, GED Soul Records and Save WRVU will be present, doin' what they do, and grub and brews will be provided by Mas Tacos and New Belgium Brewery, respectively. There will also be ticket giveaways and prize packs.

THIRD MAN RECORDS:

All right. We all know the big news about The Killer. However, tickets to see Jerry Lee Lewis at Third Man — he plays at 5 p.m., as it happens — sold out in a remarkably swift manner. (That doesn't mean some folks won't still try to make it happen.) Lewis' backing band will feature legendary go-to Stax guitarist Steve Cropper, sometime Dylan and Young drummer Jim Keltner, and bassist "Little" Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes, The Dead Weather and more. (Solid gig you landed there, LJ.) UPDATE: Third Man Records moved the festivities outdoors and released an additional 300 tickets. See more details here.

Anyhow, even if you didn't manage to snag tix to TMR's hot-ticket event, the shop and the Third Man Rolling Record Store will be open at 11:30 a.m. They'll be selling — as Steve mentioned — the following four special releases:

* The White Stripes, "Let's Shake Hands" b/w "Look Me Over Closely" reissue (TMR-088)
* The White Stripes, “Lafayette Blues” b/w “Sugar Never Tasted So Good” reissue (TMR-089)
* Karen Elson, "Vicious (Lou Reed Cover)” b/w “In Trouble With the Lord” clear vinyl with encased peach rose pedals (TMR-090)
* Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi Present: ROME Starring Jack White and Norah Jones, “Two Against One” b/w “Black” single (TMR-093)

Damn. No big deal or anything. Just peach-colored rose pedals encased inside the record. By the way, if you're still not up on the forthcoming debut of ROME, this trailer ought to shed some light for you. Full-length slated to be released in May.

Planning to do RSD for this first time this year. Probably gonna head to Grimey's. Are the lines bad? And how quick does all of this stuff tend to sell out? I don't know if I want to stand in line for three hours just to find out that the first 10 people through bought them out of everything good.

think there will be any surprise performances at the Third Man truck like Jack White did at SXSW? maybe a repeat of that? or Greenhornes since they'll be in town that day? hmmm.

@absteele: Kind of a crapshoot. Grimey's is usually pretty slammed, and the releases go quickly, but it's always a good time. If you're mainly in it for the special releases, The Groove and Great Escape typically don't have quite as overwhelming a turnout. Still, if you get to any of these joints early, you'll probably be OK.

And oshoney, considering the fact that LJ is in The Killer's backing band and Jack White will be there, I'd say surprises are likely. Surprises that might even involve, I don't know, Mayor Dean or something. Jussayin'.

If you want shorter lines you might consider The Great Escape or The Groove but keep in mind that Grimey's really ordered up this year on many of the most in-demand pieces and we order direct from almost all the labels instead of using one-stops and middle-man distros so we're getting good fill on lots of the titles. We're also racking the RSD releases out in the back parking lot under tents so the bottlenecks of previous years inside the store should be greatly improved. We open at 10am. The Great Escape opens at 9am so you could always hit that spot first, get what you can and then jet over to Grimey's to get more. The Groove opens same time as us so that might be an East vs. West decision. Wherever you decide to go, I wish everyone a most awesome Record Store Day! Support your local record stores and local businesses in general. In this economy we all need to stick together.

While they might not have all the hoopla the other stores have going that day, Phonoluxe at 2609 Nolensville Road has far and away the best used vinyl selection in town. They may not have all the Record Store Day exclusive releases, but they WILL have more actual good used records than anyone else around, and that is a fact.

I will be at Great Escape; Phonoluxe's prices are so high, you'll need an oxygen mask. Charging $75 for Allen Collins Band...uhhhhh.....no....lps for doctors & lawyers who don't know any better than to pay too high a price? I've spent thousands of dollars during the last few years elsewhere b/c of Phonoluxe's hefty tags. Nevertheless, long live RSD!
