Under his real name, David Shuford is best known as one of the members of New York experimental improv collective No Neck Blues Band. But as his alter ego D Charles Speer, Shuford branches out into various tributaries of ethnomusicology, from straight-up honky-tonk (which he'll perform with his band The Helix May 22 at Betty's) to the instrumental music of his Greek heritage.
It's the latter he'll be performing 9 p.m. Sunday at Betty's, on a bill with Bronx trio Pigeons and Nashville's own Cherry Blossoms. The filming of this recent clip is pretty bleak, but the moody intensity of the music comes through loud and clear.
