Cream Fresh Track: The Mattoid's 'Allah America'

Last month — in this music feature — with a heavy heart, I had the unfortunate charge of dropping on Nashville the knowledge that local rock’s most celebrated outsider oddball performance artist, singer-songwriter, covers crooner, musical comedian and self-proclaimed "global peasant," Ville Kiviniemi — the man behind The Mattoid — will bid us all an indefinite farewell and return to his native Helsinki come April. Bummerino metropolis, I know.
While there’s no word yet on where and when to expect an inevitable, forthcoming Mattoid farewell show, there is the track posted below. Titled “Allah America,” it’s a sweet, wistful country ditty that — with more pro-American gusto and heart than “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” — seems to sum up Music City’s favorite Finn’s storied, near decade-long, Nashville spell, and the freedom it allowed him, with a kiss. According to Mattoid bassist, sometimes-engineer and longtime local champion, Matt Swanson, the track was cut back in September of last year and posted on Soundcloud for our listening enjoyment by one Jessica Denton — a Mattoid fan from New Zealand.
