Well that didn’t take long. If you haven’t already heard, you’re probably not surprised to learn Nashvillian and great white hope of Americana, Justin Townes Earle, has temporarily traded in the road for rehab. A post on the singer’s official website announces that Earle has canceled all his pending U.S. and U.K. fall tour dates and checked himself into an unnamed treatment facility to “[confront] his ongoing struggle with addiction.”
The announcement comes less than a week following a nationally reported incident in Indianapolis, which resulted in assault and battery charges being leveled against the 28-year-old singer. The announcement also notes that those are misdemeanor charges.
While the public is still yet to hear the singer’s side of the story, what is clear is that he’s taken it as a wake up call to man up and slay his personal demons. In the video posted above — a short film directed by Tim Sutton, which also features a pretty stellar performance of the song “Slippin’ and Slidin’” — it’s clear Earle knows exactly who those demons are, as he says of his relationship with bourbon in a bar-stool interview, “I can’t drink this shit … bourbon equals stitches or jail for me.”
Apparently he wasn’t bullshittin’.
