R.I.P. Paste Magazine

Not long ago, Paste magazine associate editor Rachael Maddux shed tears of awesomeness when Those Darlins came and played a set at the magazine's offices. And now she's out of a job. As reported by Gawker (who totally went there with the headline), staff were apparently given about two hours notice of their impending unemployment. The Georgia-based magazine, focusing on the more Braff-ish side of indie, tried a pay-what-you-will campaign to save themselves that, guessing by today's news, didn't do well enough to keep the lights on.

Paste has thrown plenty of love Nashville's way during their eight-year stint, doting on the aforementioned Darlins, bestowing band-of-the-week honors on The Features, noting Grimey's among the nation's best record shops, recording JEFF the Brotherhood and naming Tristen among their "best of what's next."

Here's hoping for the best of whatever's next for the staff and contributors. Godspeed.

Man... that sucks. I really enjoyed the free booze and food at their SXSW and NBN parties.... Seriously though, they actually were a pretty respectable publication.

A respectable publication no one bought. I've never seen an issue anywhere other than for sale.

Definite bummer... pretty cool publication and seemed to fill a nice niche.

I had the chance to spend some time with their editor-in-chief, Josh Jackson, a few years ago. Our conversations about Nashville were frustrating. My claims that Nashville had other stuff going on besides Music Row Country and CCM were met with a different versions of this reply, "I know man! We love Patty Griffin." So do I, but I was trying to talk more about The Features, Hotpipes, De Novo Dahl 2.0 etc...

I really enjoyed the magazine but in retrospect they seemed to be a publication that read pitchfork (not that pitchfork is the standard bearer. hardly), filtered anything remotely challenging out and made an issue with what was left.

They also couldn't figure out how christian they wanted to be and that usually never works out. From the horses mouth, the "signs of life" slogan was spiritually based. When christian bands or movies or magazines try to trick people into not thinking they're christian that becomes the message itself.

Everyone I met there was always really nice and I am sorry for them that they have no longer have jobs, but the magazine won't be missed.

meh. i lost interest in paste around the same time i lost interest in bands like wilco and artists like m ward. for example, neither of these bands have made a great record in the past 5 or 6 years, but Paste always seemed to talk about them like they were still relevant and cutting edge. I started to want to read more about real bands like Deerhunter or Phosphorescent than She & Him and whatever Vampire Weekend sideproject.

You were nicer about it than Chunklet.

interesting about their religious slant... I always wondered... suspected... but never saw anything blatant to confirm... and actually that kinda sums up my perception of a lot of bands in Nashville too. hmmmm
