I've gotta say, working the Brandon Jazz beat is a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it. Right? Posted above is the new Seth Graves-directed EPK for Brandon Jazz and his Armed Forces. While some of you are a little less than enthused by Jazz’s aversion to shame and desire for fame, when it comes to hate, y’all got nothing on the trolls currently posting on our sister blog Pith in the Wind. At this moment, throngs of idiots are over there responding to the abhorrent acts of intimidation that were directed at Murfreesboro’s Islamic community this weekend by spewing a barrage of jingoistic rhetoric, redneckery and outright hate speech. I think the sane among us can probably agree that these folks could all use a strong dose of radical luv. Well, there will be more than enough of that to go around tonight, when Music City American Idol hopeful Brandon Jazz, his Armed Forces and friends celebrate the dropping of their latest 7-inch at Mercy Lounge for tonight’s 8 off 8th. In addition to Jazz’s inevitable using of his forces, expect to also see performances from The Black Shades, Black Baby, Captain Midnight Band and Heartbeater, in addition to sets from DJs Coach and Gumby, and a “special performance” by Matt Friction. Unfortunately, Loose Cougar and Diarrhea Planet had to drop off the bill, but fortunately they’ve been replaced by Tesla Rossa and Cobra Cheetah Tiger Viper. Take a look at what I had to say about the event in these week’s print edish of the Scene after the jump.
Incendiary local-rock lightning rod Brandon Jazz — the attention-starved auteur behind once-maligned Nashville glam-punk outfit Armed Forces — finally managed to get some luv for his melodies in addition to his antics when he unleashed the overwhelmingly infectious single and power-pop toe-tapper-for-the-ages “Radical Luv” on Music City. Of course, he did so by promoting the song and its follow-up “Vultures” via a viral-video campaign documenting his Andy Kaufman-worthy musical confrontations with the Church of Scientology’s Nashville chapter and Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church (you know, the “God hates fags” “people”). As a lark, Jazz performed “Radical Luv” at Nashville’s recent American Idol auditions. After charming first-round judges with his punked-out pizzazz and million-dollar hit, the singer made the cut, potentially putting in motion his journey toward becoming glam-punk’s answer to Sanjaya. Until that day comes to pass, Jazz will continue scheming his crafty hustle on a grassroots level. So to celebrate the release of the “Radical Luv”/“Vultures” 7-inch — which was funded by a Kickstarter campaign — Jazz is hosting an 8 off 8th soiree featuring locals like Loose Cougar, Heartbeater and Diarrhea Planet.
