Road Trip to Asheville: Moogfest, Oct. 29-31

It’s never too early — or too late, depending on how neurotic you are about planning — to make plans for your Halloween weekend. Especially if those plans can somehow also honor the memory of Dr. Robert Arthur Moog, renowned inventor of the Moog synthesizer. And let’s put a rest to this mispronunciation thing once and for all: According to the late Dr. Moog himself, Moog “rhymes with vogue. That is the usual German pronunciation … I like the way that pronunciation sounds better than the way the cow's 'moo-g' sounds.”

In the past, Moogfest has been staged in The Big Apple, but this year it moves to the beautiful city of Asheville, N.C., and will take place from Oct. 29-Oct. 31 at three venues: the Asheville Civic Center, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium and The Orange Peel. The best part? It’s a smaller-scale event than your big blow-out fests — Lolla, Coach, Sasquatch and the ’Roo, par exemple — meaning it will be somewhat modestly priced, despite its solid lineup. And it’s in our road-trip comfort radius. According to my Asheville-frequenting roomie, the drive is beautiful and can be made in “four-and-a-half hours done safely … if they fixed the rockslide on 40, which I assume should be done by now.” In keeping with the electronic spirit of the Moog legacy, the lineup features a lot of electro, dance-pop and hip-hop artists. Who, you ask? Oh, no big deal. You know, just DEVO — who staged one of the most incredible shows I saw at Lolla this year — along with stuff for the kids (Girl Talk and Dan Deacon), stuff for the kids on drugs (MGMT, Panda Bear and Pretty Lights), stuff for the olds on drugs (Van Dyke Parks), stuff for the hip-hop set (Big Boi and DJ Spooky), stuff that would make me personally dance (Hot Chip, RJD2 and Caribou) and other awesome stuff I just don’t feel like categorizing (Emeralds, Four Tet, Clare and the Reasons, The Octopus Project, School of Seven Bells and more). Follow me after the jump to see a full lineup along with ticket-pricing info.

Weekend passes are $149.50, with single-day tickets at $75 apiece. There’s also a weekend VIP pass — with all sorts of fancy-pants perks, including a Moog Music factory tour — for $349.50. Purchase tickets here. Lineup below.
