Legendary Nashvillian singer and songwriter Bobby Hebb passed away this morning at Centennial Medical Center; he was 72 years old. Hebb, who got his start at the age of 3 performing in a song-and-dance outfit with his older brother, has a long and impressive list of accomplishments — being one of the first African-Americans to perform at The Grand Ole Opry and penning the tune "Sunny" among them. "Sunny" is one of the most-covered pop songs in history, and was included on BMI's Top 100 Songs of the Century at No. 25. Back in 2000, Jonathan Marx wrote this retrospective on "Sunny" and Hebb's career for us. We'll have a longer piece on Hebb in next week's glossy, but for now you can see other Hebb-related Scene pieces here, here and here.

He was a fabulously gifted guitar player, too. Reminded me of that Marv Tarplin or Wayne Bennett thing- pretty, churchy chords. Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times, very gracious, even when I drunkenly interrupted his lunch at Old Tymer's BBQ and Fish. Rest easy, Mr. Hebb.

Oh man. I love Bobby Hebb. I knew he lived in Nashville. "Sunny" is one of my favorite songs of all time. Such a great melody. I just sit at the piano and plink it out all the time.
