Seth-Aid Feat. The Pink Spiders, The Non-Commissioned Officers and More Tonight at Mercy Lounge

Y'all enjoyed the Conference Call video the other day, right? Well, let's not let the guy who shot and edited the thing end up in the hoosegow. The campaign to keep Seth Graves' ass out of lock reaches its logical apex tonight in the form of a benefit show, which I will not do a better job of telling you about than our own D. Patrick Rodgers, who has this to say about it in this week's Critics' Picks:

As much of a rapscallion, ne’er-do-well, nogoodnik and downright joker as our buddy Seth Graves can be, we sure do love the guy. He contributes for us (see his picks on Hammertorch and Max and the Wild Things), and he does pretty much all the video work for our music blog, the Nashville Cream. So now that he finds himself in some legal trouble — a few grand worth of legal trouble, in fact — how could we ignore his plight? As it happens, if Seth “Casio Casanova” Graves doesn’t scrounge up the scratch to pay off some legal fees he’s incurred, he’s going to end up in jail. Like, real jail. But whether or not you feel for the guy, tonight’s lineup is a very strong one that’s worthy of your cashola. First, you’ve got the reunited Pink Spiders, appearing together with their original lineup on a Music City stage for the first time in over two years. Then there’s new wave revivalists The Non-Commissioned Officers, fresh off the slot they won at this year’s Bonnaroo. Rounding things out are Scene favorites Shoot the Mountain and The Armed Forces, the latter fronted by local controversy-monger and sometime Graves collaborator Brandon Jazz. A minimum donation of $7 is requested.

Not to mention a rake and a roustabout! Anyway, 9 p.m. at Mercy Lounge, 18+ for all you voters-but-not-drinkers.

Aren't there still people out there without electricity and flood damaged homes?

No? Oh okay, well this is a great idea then.

Are we supposed to just be ok with donating to a guy with no explanation as to what for? Legal fees? Can someone please be more specific? I can understand a benefit show for diseases, medical bills, non-profits, etc. But how exactly am I supposed to support this when there is no clear explanation? Is he really a victim here?

Alright, alright. I think we'll have to leave it to Seth to explain the exact details of his legal pickle ... I don't want to try and explain it and get it wrong. But basically, he screwed up a few years ago (DUI I think? Still not exactly sure ... ), his fees were very high, he's been working on getting them paid down for a long time, and it's crunch time.

I totally feel everybody on the "Why the hell should WE pay to keep this dude out of jail?" tip. If I didn't know Seth, I'd probably say, "Fuck that dude! He screwed up; it's on him." I do know him and don't want him to go to jail, of course. At the same time, I think this is one of those things that's pretty simple: Here's the show, here's the bill. Pretty solid bill. If you want to go, go and pay, as you would with any other show. It's not exactly the world's most worthy cause ... but it still sounds like a pretty fun show. Whatev.

Yeah. After benefits for flood victims and cancer battles, a show raising money to pay for the mysterious woes of a blogger who constantly brags about how fucked up he got at the show last night is a hard pill to swallow. My guess is DUI or unpaid child support.

here's the deal. there's no secret to any of this, all you gotta do is ask. i knew i was going to get a shit ton of flack over it, but i should hope any and all of you know how little i give a shit of what folks think by now.

more over, nobody is being asked to give me anything and get nothing in return. i put together the most bad ass lineup i could so people could come out and see a good show and get their money's worth. the only people sacrificing anything are my friends in these bands who aren't charging me to play. That said, i've offered to shoot music videos/epk's/etc for all of them (something I charge $200 - 700 normally). So even they're getting a sweet deal. so, if you can point out to me who's getting screwed here, i'll be glad to rectify those greivances as well.

as for an explanation.i did get in trouble a few years back. DUI and posession of illegal narcotics. under the plan i devised, my fines were to be paid the last month of my probation. but due to an oversight (two charges, two balances, lots of confusion) + the fact that i wasn't responsible enough to keep the receipts from all my money orders to prove that i have actually sent the state of Alabama more money than for what they're crediting me, uit turns out i'm about $1500 short. This show was the idea of my friends' Matt Friction, Brandon Jazz and Ashley Spurgeon. Not my own. But if they were willing to do it, i was willing to let them for the sake of staying out of an Alabama Prison.

Plain and simple, it's an awesome show at a reasonable price. if you'd rather miss seeing some bands you like on principle you don't agree with, stay home. no one's getting ripped off. no one's being forced to do anythying they don't want. if you still think i'm a douche, chances are, you were going to think that anyway. life goes on.

finally, for the record,
lots of people have real problems. and i have a job. my job does not pay me $1500 in a week, though. however, you should come have lunch with me at the Arcade on my break sometime. it gets lonely working downtown.

@b_rad i shoot on a $2k Canon Camera that i bought on credit with a $100 lens. get your facts straight.

Sounds sort of like a rent party to me. Only the rent is keeping you out of the Bama Pokey. I feel you though. My truck needed a new differential this week and I ended up coughing up $1500. Now I have no money to put gas in the damn thing so I'm essentially biking and eating beans and peanut butter for 2 weeks. I was sitting around feeling sorry for myself and then I came across this post. Not a bad idea really. Don't think I'll be throwing any self-benefits but I gotta admire your effort.

When you were walking out of the bar last night, I'm pretty sure you snubbed me. Is that a good reason to stay home? Not that anyone would really believe that I'm capable of staying in ever.

@Malina

Everyone else is going, except the people who don't want to. That's the great thing about America! No one's making anyone do anything they don't feel like doing based on principle or laziness.

OK, Whiners. (Yeah - I capitalized it. You're a proper noun to me.) Ashley said it nicely. That's never been my strong point. NO ONE IS ASKING YOU TO GIVE SETH ANYTHING. It's a show. YOU aren't donating anything. The Mercy Lounge & the bands are donating the money raised - so YOU aren't doing ANYTHING to help ANYONE. You're paying seven bucks to see some bands. Those bands want their money to go to Seth. John Bruton wants the money to go to Seth. They are doing this because THEY care about Seth. If you want Seth's funds to be seven bucks shorter, so be it. But don't act like someone is placing a burden on you. Are there still homeless Nashvillians? Yes. If you had rather go help them instead of watching Brandon masturbate on stage, by all means you have my full support. But something tells me you probably aren't giving them your seven dollars either. So don't pretend like your opinion is founded on anything other than substance-free self-righteousness. By the way, looking at this website ads hits. Which earn money for the Scene/Cream - paying Seth. So you may not want to ever check this blog out again.

maybe if seth promises to eat a small/medium sized piece of cat feces on stage then people will be more inclined to feel okay about paying.

Why don't you just file an extension on your probation to give you more time to pay? That makes more sense than having a benefit show to pay off your legal fees. I understand that nobody has to go that doesn't want to go (YEAH, NO SHIT!) but there are many, many, many more worthwhile causes in our community than bailing you out of trouble. There are still scores of Nashvillians who are still reeling from the May flood. It's just a little self-important and dickish to think that your fees from a DUI / Possession charge take precedence over that.

As a general rule of thumb, if you're over the age of 30 you should handle your own shit. If that includes time in an Alabama jail, that's on you bro. Maybe doing a little time will teach you a little something about consequences. (Yeah, that's right. I went all parental on your ass).

And from his facebook page: "Seth Graves also. now that i'm a rich man, i'm on the lookout for a used iphone, and a used Big Muff or Rat pedal"

Even your friends think you're a fucking lameass. Go to jail like you deserve to. You'll always need to be someone's bitch.

Seth Graves should go to jail. Pink Spiders STILL suck and has sucked since 2004 and ole Brandon Jazz keeps giving mercy a bad name- and his band is probably the worse I've ever seen or heard. He has to be blowing someone over there to still have a job.
