Oh, that Janelle Monae — she's really toyed with our affections, hasn't she? First, she was slated to open for Erykah Badu at The Ryman, but then that show got canceled. Then she was going to be on the Nashville Lilith Fair tour stop at Bridgestone Arena, then was taken off the bill with no explanation. Then that whole thing got canceled anyway. Those of us wanting to see J. Monae bring her art-deco science-fiction R&B to Music City have been punched in the neck by the booking gods time and again. So. It is with glee but also trepidation — gettin' pretty tired of redacting all these bloggings — that I give you the good word (via Pitchfork) that, barring any more cancellations, tomfoolery or natural disasters, Janelle Monae is coming to The Cannery Ballroom on Sept. 26, with Of Montreal.
This is going to be awesome.
Now, I've seen Sean Maloney tell an auditorium full of teenage rock campers and their families that Monae's Archandroid is one of the best albums of the year, and I'm inclined to agree with him. It's 2010, the year "mo-nay" started meaning awesome future-funk instead of blurry paintings of hay! Let's watch a video.
