Like any responsible musicologist, I’m sure as hell not gonna pass up an opportunity to post the video for Tom Tom Club’s 1981 pop masterpiece “Genius of Love” when one arises. While the sheer compositional, uh, genius and indubitable infectiousness are more than enough cause to justify posting this clip for pure, uncontextualized enjoyment, there is indeed an impetus for today’s Creamy inclusion: Tom Tom Club are coming to Exit/In, Sept. 26 — according to Pollstar.
While news of the TTC’s return to the road following a more than decade-long absence ranks at, like, a 7.1 outta 10 on the rock reunion scale, a bona fide Talking Heads reunion would handily rank at a 20. But as time goes on, one seems more and more unlikely — the acrimony between David Byrne and his former bandmates is legendary. If only they could start making sense, bury the hatchet and bring some goddamn happiness to this world, the enlightened among us could all live happily ever after. Sigh. Anyway, if you don’t proceed to play the above clip on repeat for at least the next hour then you’re failing at life.
A Heads reunion is still a long way off at best, but Franz and Weymouth will do their best to compensate by going all out with the current version of Tom Tom Club, which Franz recently told Pollstar “consists of seven players, is smoking hot and completely live. We don’t use any sequencers or backing tapes at all.”
Sounds like fun. I’ll likely check it out, but it still doesn’t hurt to dream.
