Bon Jovi, the New Jersey pop-metal hit factory turned Kenny-Chesney-meets-Coldplay adult contempos, may be one of the most perpetually successful American rock bands of the last quarter-century, but they haven’t forgotten their roots. Before a career that saw them reign in regular rotation on Nickelodeon and CMT, they were just some Jersey rats with a dream. Singer Jon Bon Jovi made his entrance into the music world as a studio bitch at The Power Station, and his band cut their teeth opening for artists the likes of ZZ Top and The Scorpions.

Perhaps as a tribute to those formative trials and tribs, or just as an opportunity to give something back for the kind hand fate dealt them many moons ago, the Jov are lending their star power and their stage to 13 up-and-coming bands who are holdin’ on to what they got, with opening slots in eight cites on their forthcoming summer stadium tour. Bands were selected by fan votes via Jovi’s A Super Band Tonight contest. Among those livin’ on answered prayers are Nashville’s own The Worsties, who will open for Bon Jovi and Kid Rock at Chicago’s Soldier Field — home of Da Bears — on July 31.

This isn’t the first time Jon Bon & Co. have given starving rockers such an opportunity. On 2005’s Have a Nice Day tour the band tapped local openers for various shows with a similar competition. If The Worsties want to maximize their opportunity to wow, they’ll follow in the footsteps of England’s The Omega Threat, who supposedly spent their 20 minutes of stadium-sized glory cranking out an abrasive barrage of noise and feedback while shouting Marxist phrases at the tens of thousands in attendance, who probably wanted the band dead, as opposed to alive, by day’s end. Come on Worsties, tell me you've got something like that up your sleeves.

For more info, check out the contest website here and The Worsties site here. Congrats Worsties, and good luck! Also, remember that giving Kid Rock a kick in the balls is still a Nashvillian’s civic duty, so if you can, then by all means do.
