Summer Jams: What's Your Flavor?

Posted By on Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 12:33 PM

Good news, everybody! Now that Memorial Day has passed us by, it is officially unofficial summertime. That means we all have to start abiding by three rules: skipping out of work early on Fridays, drinking outdoors, and picking out a Summer Jam.

Choosing a Summer Jam is easily the most important of these duties. For the rest of your life, whatever song you had on heavy rotation during make-out sessions, crying jags, road trips and picnics is going to glom onto those memories; it’s just a fact. I can’t listen to Santigold without fondly reminiscing about last year’s Bonnaroo. I can’t even think about Klaxons without having Summer of Dreamz flashbacks. Choose wisely.

Summer Jams come in two flavors: there are the excellent pop hits that sweep the nation (and tend to be of the R&B or hip-hop persuasion), and then there are the songs you yourself put on heavy rotation. Songs of any genre, any decade, any ilk. I’ve asked some of the Cream Team to take us back to their Summer Jams of years past, make predictions for the coming months, and invite you to share your Jams in the comments.

Seth Graves:
Mean Jeans' album Are You Serious?, but most specifically the video for "Steve Don't Party No More" - I want to live my whole summer inside that video.

Weezer has provided many summer jams in the past because their release dates were always in late spring (Pinkerton, Green Album, Maladroit). Back before I lost my tolerance for Jeff Buckley, I could only listen to Grace in the summertime at night.

DJ Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince, "Summertime"
Mungo Jerry, "In the Summertime"
Wreckx n Effect, "Rumpshaker"
N2Deep, "Back 2 The Hotel"
Tag Team, "Woomp! There It Is"

Local dudes Fly Golden Eagle are getting me summertime pumped with their new record. Below is an old one. Here's a new one.

Pavement's "Summer Babe" comes to mind, past wise. MEEMAW's "Blue in the Blacklight" was THE summertime jam in '08.

Sean L. Maloney
I have no idea how it flew under my radar for almost a year. Summer Jam:

German/Nigerian super hotness from Nneka:

All time summer jam champion:

Ashley Spurgeon

I don't know what happened, but I was way into anything Francophone last summer:

(HT to Tracy Moore for the Malajube heads up):

And as for this year, me and Maloney have decreed it the year of Janelle Monáe.
