Fans of rock 'n' roll music and putting awesome things in small places, rejoice -- Swearing at Motorists are coming to town, and they're playing a show that will only hold 40 people! On Saturday, Mar. 20, the Ohio duo* will play Brandes and Dean's studio/rehearsal space in East Nashville, along with The Carter Administration and Chris Crofton in some capacity. If you've never caught a Swearing at Motorists show**, I will tell your right now: It's intense. There's jumping that happens. And big songs. And kicking. You should go. Tickets are $15 and you get them here. Now, $15 might sound like a lot for a house show, but not only will there be a keg for you to drink of, everyone in attendance will get a recording of the show. Nice, right? As a sampling of what awaits, here's S@M doing "24, 40, 65" at Exit/In a while back, as filmed by those Tugboat guys who do the Lake Fever Sessions:
* On this evening, frontman Dave Doughman will be joined by Don Thrasher, formerly of Guided by Voices, not usual S@M drummer Joseph Siwinski. ** Swearing at Motorists once challenged The White Stripes to a battle of the rock duos, which, as you can imagine, has never been accepted. (Are they even a band anymore?) As someone who's seen both Swearing at Motorists and The White Stripes in a small club setting, I don't know who would win a contest between the two, but if it happened, which it won't, I have a feeling it'd be pretty fun. So go to this show instead, because it's actually happening.

I'm a huge a GBV fan, but never really got into these guys. There's really no comparison. The songs are just so-so...
is it because they're tied to GBV that everyone loves them THIS much? Just askin'.

They sound nothing like GBV. The only comparison is they're from Dayton and Thrasher was their drummer for a while. Any other GBV comparison is pointless. They're the two-man Who. And, your opinion on their songs is certainly debatable... or more like - just your opinion.

Wow, Brandez, you're taking it personally.
I've seen S@M 4 times, so i'm familiar with their music. For what it is, it's decent, but they ain't no Who!!?!?! It's about the songs, and "Flying Pizza" or "24, 40, 65," or countless others, just don't hold up as anything great. Yeah, it's my opinion, but I'm sure there are others who agree. Judging by the youtube video posted above, i can't say that i think an extremely thinly-veiled rip-off of Sabbath or any other plodding E-D riff is really anything to get excited about. In someone else's hands, this riff wouldn't generate any interest at all (hence, my claim that the tenuous GBV connection is the main reason for this interest). But you're hosting this show, so it's you're job to get excited, I guess.
Good luck with it, in all sincerity...

Uhhh, can't the same exact thing be said about you...
Who charges to get in a house show dude? Just asking.

Not sure why I'm explaining this, but I am. Doughman lives in Germany, and he's coming over to do a few house shows in the States. He set the $15 price, which covers his travel to the States, and expenses while here. People who host these shows don't make money, they're just offering an opportunity for S @ M fans to see the band. It's like ol' Bobby P says: "If you don't like it, don't buy it."

I'm just sayin' their reputation should not be attributed to any connection to GBV. It is indeed my opinion that the music and the songs stand up on their own. Other than that, I couldn't care less. I'm buyin' the beer and providing a venue for anyone who wants to see them though. So come on down and see for yourself. Dave's a great guy and would love to rock you. No matter what, it will be fun.
Now, if you would like me to stir up more shit, please let me know somewhere else to do so. I have no idea why anyone who doesn't care for the band would consider commenting anyway. Some of you are just plain ol' cynical and silly.

I'll bite. The only reason anyone even knows about this band is because they made that challenge to the White Stripes. This stuff is totally mediocre. That is my opinion which is obviously shared by quite a few people if they would book a house party show that fits 40 and offer free beer to help sell it out.

You win, ddt! Your prize is that you will not be forced to buy tickets to see a show by a band whose music you don't enjoy. Congrats!
