Have you been sitting on a gem of an idea for a weekly rock 'n' roll-themed party-time event? Just couldn't find the proper venue? Here's your chance to be Nashville's Steve Rubell: The 5 Spot's Todd Sherwood is looking to fill the gap between Monday night's ever-popular dance-party meat markets and Wednesday night's more sophisticated Old Time Jam. Says Mr. Sherwood:
Any ideas for a regular Tuesday night event for the 5 Spot? Seriously people. "Open Mic Gong Show" isn't going to work. "Bring your Kids to the Smokey Bar Night" is another bad idea. "Homeless Idol" was voted down a while back. I need a realistic regular Tuesday thing.
Um, why won't the Gong Show thing work?? That would be the perfect place to try out my nude cat-juggling routine. Alright, how about Snake & Shake Night? It's a dance-off in which dozens of live cobras are released in the bar. Totally Snake could be the house band. True, Homeless Idol might be a touch tasteless, but why not Hipster Idol? If you told a bunch of East Siders that the person with the highest votes in a talent competition would get his or her tab cleared, you know you'd end up seeing some hilarious shit. "I can totally put my legs behind my head while reciting every lyric from Trapped in the Closet chapters 1-13." Anyhow, if you've got a gem-jam of an idea for a recurring Tuesday night event, please share it in the comments.

Man, I totally miss the Blind Draw night, but I don't know if that could be sustain itself on a weekly basis.
For the sake of unfamiliars, Blind Draw night was when people showed up, put together a band and performed the next week, right? That sounds pretty awesome. Maybe just a monthly thing?
How 'bout a night where, say, three bands play? Maybe four. Maybe even one from out of town, they can play second because they're on the road and stuff. The club could charge, like, $5. Nashville needs more of that.
Actually, Blind Draw is when you show up, draw a number, and are in a band with whoever else draws that number, and you play that night. You have an hour to figure out two songs you all know (or write two songs) and then you play them on stage, without practicing. It gets really awesome if you have four drummers or four bass players in the same band. It's very entertaining, to say the least. It totally works monthly, but it could wear out its welcome on a weekly basis.
lol... how about Quiz Bowl? DO IT FOR THE NERDS! CAH-MON! Beer, popcorn, and the capital of Fiji...
Quiz Bowl. Now there's a capital idea!
PS - The answer is "Suva."
You could grab some of the skins from foo-bar and have boot party bingo.
Cream Grudge Night.
Any locals or outtatowners that have a beef about what one of the writers says gets to challenge that writer. In any number of forums. Trivia, arm wrestling, drinking contests, pool, cage match, etc. We could start a whole bookey for it!(behind the scenes of course.)
Install bowling lanes and I will be there every single Tuesday. Especially if it's Cream Grudge Night.
East Side Soul Nite. Get a good house band and have guests vocalist. Spin good Soul albums the entire night.
Or have a block of DJs who all lost their shows on WRVU and broadcast it on the Internets.
I like Paul's idea.
@Steve: On various Internets, or one in particular?
Don't worry Patrick, it will only hurt for a second.
I second Paul's idea. I'm also for a hip hop night, or a jazz night. But that would be like all 20 of us.
To be clear, I meant there are about 20 of us in Nashville that would be all about a jazz night at Five Spot. I hope I'm wrong and everyone would be all about it.
Don't worry Patrick, it will only hurt for a second.
Hey man, I'm the nice one. Tracy's pregnant and Steve has cat-like evasive maneuvers, so if anyone takes one in the chin for the Cream, it's probably gonna have to be Gold or Maloney. They can handle it.
And here I thought I'd get laughed off the CREAM board. If such an Eastside Soul band is created, I'll offer my tenor services.
I'd be down for a soul night. We're doing it right now at The Basement. Y'all should come check out The Right Now (from Chicago) and Billy Goats tomorrow night at Outta Sight Nite. Last one is Thurs March 4 w/ The New Majority (members of the Dynamites and DeRobert & The Half-Truths) and Los Explosiones (serious latin funk a la Mongo Santamaria, Ray Barretto, etc). Come out and show some love and maybe we can move it over to the East side.
I also miss vinyl nights at Family Wash. Everybody brings a record and plays one side of it. If everyone gets their turn, then you do another round. Chance to share your cool vinyl treasures and get turned on to new ones. No DJ skillz required.
My bass duties are offically offered for said band.
@acnabal and Paul- If your interested in a Jazz Jam come to Edgehill Studios Cafe Monday March 1 at 7. Bring your axe. I hate to break the news but it is five bones, but it's the best we have. Last time Jeff Coffin sat in, it was scary fun.
@ Ashley I'm sure we can work something out. Start pissing people off. More
Spurgeon, you're the wild card. Duh.
You think Charles Walker would show up for a night?
Not to get off topic, but...
@Steve H. Oh, how I wish there was a bowling lane with a stage. Rock n Bowl. We could start a league - bands vs. bands/ blogs vs. blogs
Loving the Rock 'n Bowl idea, even if it obviously couldn't work at the 5-Spot.
Themed karaoke? The possibilities are endless...
blind draw was definitely a good time. that would be fun to check out, and a solid first prize could guarantee a decent turnout, right? the soul night is a good idea, too. there also is a weekly oil wrestling-shaped hole in the nashville nightlife as far as i'm concerned. kidding...kind of.
I'm with JR for Quiz Bowl. Especially if every week there's a Boss Tweed question.
Now how to get Pointy and Sager in the mix?
Why do people who so clearly hate 90% of the music out there even go to shows, much less write about them? I just don't get it...
Oops. Meant to post this on the Road to Bonnaroo review. Sorry about that. Carry on.
blind draw! who could forget "butt pussy" or "bill hall's leathery ball sack"? have it once a month. the other tuesdays you hipster fags can go fuck yourselves. kidding...kind of. but seriously, $50 bar tab for winning band?
@powers, thanks! I'll come check it out.
also, I've already mentioned this to Todd, but another band night just isn't gonna cut it (for some of us...)
I'm very interested in just a good hang. 3Crow, Red Door East used to be a good hang years back, but now it's so damn crowded (as is Monday nights at 5Spot, although I still go to dance). It would totally be cool to have a place to go and sit and listen to records and have conversations with friends. Kinda like old Slow Bar days.
er, I mean, but what you guys have all suggested is cool to.
@deagol - Pointy will be hard to get back in town, but Tommy will show up for sure.
Since we can't get the band back together in its original form, maybe we can recruit a fill-in. Wonder what Zalman King is up to?
since the 5 spot is asking for advice, i'll offer some:
for chrissakes can you guys please staff an extra bartender or two when you know you're going to have a packed show? Unless, of course, you're a-okay with bar sales that are 30% below potential. Waiting 30 minutes for a drink (actually make that two drinks because you have to go double fisted when the wait is that long) is pathetic. You have a barback but i don't understand why. Promote him to chair three bartender on busy nights and get one of his buddies to barback. And the whole scenario where dudes and girls who are pals with the bartenders get to circumvent the wait by hanging at the side of the bar by the soundboard (so they can get faster service) IS EMBARRASSINGLY AMATEUR. If you wanna give special service to say, the guys in Autovaughn or other east nasty 'VIPs' then rope that shit off and make it your official VIP drink ordering area.
Also, you guys have the slowest, most disinterested bartenders in town. I get better and faster service from Bruce at the End and the guys at springwater. At the five spot, I tip awesome and I get slow and shit service. I'm not trying to make it personal, I'm sure the bartenders at 5 spot are nice guys and are friends with a lot of people who read this blog. and i understand the simple math of tips split three ways vs. tips split two ways. im just sayin...i'm starting to avoid the place when i think its gonna be even half full. And I'm not the only one who's been talking about this.
i totes agree w/ SWITTS@YB (if i can call you that?). say a good night is $500 in tips divided by 2: $200 each including tip out. adding another bartender so i don't go to the red door or the fucking citgo $1000 in tips divided by 3: $300 including tip out. IT WILL DOUBLE. higher sales equals higher tip%!
Two-fer Tuesdays. Any combo of Nashville acts, solo or bands, of any variety, who don't usually play together, but on these nights--do.
Potluck Jam.
Bring food and and instruments. Sign Up to play, don't poison people.
@steve ha ha hiptser bingo... so fucking spot on it's hard to take... but on the reals.. the parliament cigs totally reminds me of Oak Ridge, TN circa '97.
@ D-Funk dude if they do a funk night at 5spot i gurantee all the B-boys will be there. That alone is worth coming out to watch.
@Gold i second that motion. Two or three bands with an out-of-towner and a $5 cover charge on the door. You could even be as riskay to split 100% of the door between the BANDS dare I suggest! Maybe call it: "Tuesday Night Rock Show that makes FUCKING SENSE". Oh, and no having the club owner cancel on afore mentioned local bands and out-of-towners three weeks prior to said show for a "private event".
