White Stripes to U.S. Air Force Reserve: Song in Super Bowl Commercial not Cool With Us

I didn't catch the U.S. Air Force Reserve spot during this year's Super Bowl -- maybe because I had gotten fed up with bad attempts at Internet meme-jokes and stopped watching The Commercials -- but it looks like the White Stripes did not approve or even know about the version of their song "Fell in Love With a Girl" that was used in the commercial. From a statement:

We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management.

The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support.

The link to the commerical posted to the White Stripes website does not seem to be playing the video in question anymore. Furthermore, Arthur reports:

Apparently the geniuses at Blaine Warren Advertising of Las Vegas, Nevada were behind this idiocy. According to the New York Times, Blaine Warren will be issuing a statement later today. That should be amusing reading.

(And of course Arthur mentions Godsmack.) I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that re-recording a song by a well-known band and using it in your Super Bowl commercial is so fucking bush league it boggles the mind. Oh, and props to J.W. for the countermeasures.

After 3 weeks on the the Roll to the Bowl tour, Les Honky More Tonkies and Turley return to Mercy Lounge in Nashville for the final show of the tour.
The Roll to the Bowl crew consisted of neo southern rockers Les Honky More Tonkies, and former Saints All Pro offensive tackle Kyle Turley's new band, and benefitted The GridIron Greats Foundation for former players with health issues. The Tour started in Austin with a few Texas dates and followed the Gulf Coast, including 4 crazy New Orleans area performances, and North Florida gigs before ending with several great shows in Miami on Super Bowl weekend.
Now, we are bringing what has turned into a New Orleans Saints VICTORY PARTY home to the Big Guitar!! We know its a school night, but we're doing it up NOLA style, and in NOLA they don't care when the party is, as long as the party IS!
So join us tomorrow night at Mercy Lounge for the OFFICIAL, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl XLIV, Middle Tennessee VICTORY PARTY!!!

You are so right. From a legal standpoint this is super fucked up. Particularly since this is a branch of the government rather than a private corporate entity.

yeah, i'm sure the air force had everything to do with ripping off a white stripes song. they paid a firm to make an ad with an original composition. the firm paid a songwriter dude to put together an original composition. the songwriter dude ripped off the white stripes. i'm thinking neither the old dudes in the firm, nor the old dudes in the air force had any idea. i guess you could call it 'super fucked up', but in perspective, i would probably call it 'mildly fucked up'. in any case, songwriter dude and the firm will be on the hook for being 'super fucked up', not the air force.

they definitely deserve compensation, though, and at the least have the ad pulled. kind of the toothpaste-back-in-the-tube thing, though, if you're talking super bowl.
