Hank III at Layla's: 'White Trash'

Posted by Steve Haruch on Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 9:02 AM

As many of you know, Hank III has been playing down at Layla's as of late, packing the room (so much so that even intrepid, punctual journalists can't wedge in) and causing people to use the words "revitalized" and "Lower Broad" in the same sentences. Then again, maybe you didn't know your Lower Broad was being revitalized, in which case this recording from a recent performance, uploaded to YouTube by user boxinpilot1, will get you back up to speed. Probably the darkest, angriest, shit-kickingest music to rattle the honky-tonk glass in a little bit.

Am I not supposed to like this? 'Cause I kinda do.
Would I like it without the lineage? I think so, but I wouldn't have listened to it in the first place.
Made me look, made me like.

Folks, Hank Williams III is one of the most brilliant musicians recording today. Having a number of errant hillbilly genes, I dig the country stuff. The guy's country stuff has to be taken in a musicological light, as he has mined the detritus of country music from Bob Wills through to Waylon Jennings(a period from about 1925 to 1975) and has masterfully loaded all his albums with every pastiche, nuance, and "hook" of that 50 year period. The guy is a scholar, condensing all of that history into something which is much greater than just a "sound". But then you here the live shows and he takes you through almost a hundred years of music....from Western swing to psychobilly to hardcore punk in about 3 hours...unique
